“But Gideon was experiencing one powerful emotion: being sick of everyone’s shit.”

Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #1) by Tamsyn Muir

July 17, 2023 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

I write this review with a heavy heart. I know how much many of my Cannonball Read peeps loved this book/series and I waited a long time to get it from the library, with eager anticipation. I really really wanted to love it too, and I just didn’t. This story was filled with unique and interesting characters, the book was infused with great humor, and Muir has created an amazing world, but it’s just not my vibe. My hero Amy Poehler taught me the phrase, […]

I cannot live this way. I have nowhere to go. I have nobody to turn to. I am a nonsense.

CBR15PASSPORT (Stamp #6: Books recommended by friends. Namely ALL of you.) CBR15 BINGO: (Queer Lives square: queer author and queer characters.) What did I just read? I’m not mad about it. I’m glad that I read it but I have so many thoughts. So many thoughts that I’m not sure I can articulate them properly. So many thoughts that are DEFINITELY spoilery. For the 2 or 3 of you that haven’t read these books yet…please do. Don’t however, read this review because I think it […]

I think death must be an absolute triumph.

CBR15 PASSPORT (Stamp #6: Books recommended by friends. Namely ALL of you.) When Cannonballers can’t shut up about a book, you read it. I’d like to say I’m sorry it took me so long to read it, but…nope. ‘Cause I have the opportunity to read the other two books in this trilogy without waiting for them to be published. Hee hee! Yikes! You guys were not wrong about this one. In the last year or so I have found my way back to science fiction and […]

How many legs do I have?

Nona the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #3) by Tamsyn Muir

December 5, 2022 by narfna 7 Comments

Three months later: I’ve had some time to adjust. This book is still wild, and while I’ve come to terms with most of it, there’s one thing that’s still bothering me. I’m hoping it will be resolved in the last book. No idea how she’s going to manage it, but she somehow managed to pull Harrow and Nona out of her butt, and they are both weird and mad genius in their own special ways, so I’m sure she’ll manage it, but I will not lie, I am […]

Into Shadow Series Review

The Garden by Tomi Adeyemi

Persephone by Lev Grossman

The Six Deaths of the Saint by Alix E. Harrow

Undercover by Tamsyn Muir

What the Dead Know by Nghi Vo

The Candles Are Burning by Veronica G. Henry

Out of the Mirror, Darkness by Garth Nix

Wow. I really wish this series of short stories had been released around Halloween, some of the stories are very good and the horror/fantasy elements are great. There are at least two stories I wish had been longer novels (The Six Deaths of the Saint and Undercover) because of how good they were and how much I didn’t want the stories to be over when I got to the end. “The Garden” by Tomi Adeyemi (2 stars)-This one compared to the other books in the […]

Hopefully it’s just series sophmore slump

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Potentially unpopular opinion ahead: I did not especially like Harrow the Ninth. I loved Gideon the Ninth, but I don’t think all the narrative experimenting and the pacing worked out well here. After Harrow becomes a Lyctor and Gideon is gone, about 85 percent of the Harrow the Ninth is confusion. The narrative switches between second and third person (there’s also some first person but that is mostly later) and neither voice really knows what’s going on; on the one hand, this makes sense because […]
