Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

July 20, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

This one I stopped and started a few times. I just could not get into it. This is the second Brodesser-Akner book I have read and at this point I just need to hard pass. I think this could have worked if I cared about any of the characters. But I ended up despising Ruth and Beemer. And I found Nathan and Jenny exhausting. The book just felt so long and I got tired of reading about the Fletchers. I know that Brodesser-Akner was going […]

Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

September 8, 2024 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Polystyrene magnate Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from the driveway of his Middle Rock, Long Island estate one morning in 1980. After a very tense week in captivity, he is returned upon the payment of $250,000 ransom, but he is much the worse for wear. Nervous and panicky in the aftermath of his ordeal, Carl retreats from the world and is never the same man again. The kidnapping also severely impacts his wife Ruth, and their three children, Bernard (nicknamed Beamer), Nathan, and third sibling Jenny, […]

The Only Way To Get Someone To Listen to a Woman

Fleishman Is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

January 17, 2021 by Leslie Leave a Comment

A few years ago I watched a movie with Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. The premise is that Teller — a massage therapist with a pregnant girlfriend — gets sucked into a lucrative but unethical business selling arms to the US government during the Iraq war. I didn’t finish the film, in part because the opening sequence irritated me to such an extent that it poisoned my view of the story. We meet Teller’s character after a business scheme fails and he is “reduced” to […]

Too much of the less interesting Fleishman

Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

December 27, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s celebrity profile pieces for magazines like The New Yorker and GQ- they are smart, insightful and well-written essays that reflect on larger cultural issues as filtered through the lens of a particular celebrity.  Given this history, I had high hopes for her first novel. The plot in Fleishman is straightforward: Toby Fleishman, a specialist physician in Manhattan, is in the process of divorcing his wife, Rachel.  Rachel drops their two kids off at Toby’s rental apartment one morning […]

I found it somehow both infuriating and forgetable?

Fleishman Is In Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner

I know that Fleishman Is In Trouble is mostly set from the primary male character’s point of view to demonstrate that he’s a jackass. He doesn’t see it, because he’s not terribly self aware, but we’re in his head so we do. It’s kind of like when we start getting Cersei Lannister POV chapters. Toby Fleishman doesn’t realize it, but he’s a dick. And I appreciate that. I enjoy the Cersei chapters precisely because we get to see from her perspective how she doesn’t see she’s […]

A Nearly Normal Family by M.T. Edvardsson

The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith

September 28, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

I am seven reviews behind and I’m determined to get these done before I start another book. This grouping is my ‘grown up’ books before I get to another four Young Adult books. Fleishman Is In Trouble: I adore Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s work as a profile writer so I was very excited to pick up her first novel. I felt simultaneously very seen by and put off by this book. Toby Fleishman is a divorcing father of two who finds himself unexpectedly saddled with his two […]
