There’s a Girl in a Tower, But This Isn’t Her Story

Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher

May 9, 2024 by RouletteGirl Leave a Comment

If you know me, you know that a good fairytale retelling or interpretation is totally my jam. Robin McKinley had me by the throat for years thanks to Beauty, Deerskin, Spindle’s End, etc. So when I learned that T. Kingfisher, an author whose books I’ve previously enjoyed (and who is a delightful follow on used-to-be-Twitter), had a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty, I was more than down. Thornhedge is the story of Toadling, who was stolen by the faeries as a newborn babe, adopted by a […]

T. Kingfisher catch up!

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

(Sworn Soldier #2) What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher

April 11, 2024 by kfishgirl 3 Comments

A woman nicknamed Mouse has to clear out her grandma’s house after her dad asks. She’s just about to start a new job when something happens and she can’t, so she’s widely available to help. Grandma wasn’t a very nice lady, so she doesn’t even have fond memories to look back on. Oh, and she was a baaad hoarder. Sidebar story here – my Gram lived in a nursing home until she passed away two years ago. She was ninety four, and less than two […]

Another great one from the wacky mind of T. Kingfisher

4. (The Saint of Steel #4) Paladin’s Faith by T. Kingfisher

April 5, 2024 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

It turns out that I love T. Kingfisher. Anyone who’s read a post from me before probably knows that though. I think I got into Kingfisher with one of her weird books a few years ago. It was about a hole in the wall of an oddity museum that led to alternate worlds. I just remember my awe at this author who could scare me, freak me out, and make me laugh crazily all in the same book. I just keep reading her books now […]

Now goodnight moon, I want the sun

What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher

April 3, 2024 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

What Feasts at Night is the second book in T. Kingfisher’s Sworn Soldier series. The protagonist Alex Easton is a sworn soldier of Gallacia, a land that uses pronouns a bit differently. Alex is what we would consider non-binary. After the chilling events of the first book, (a dread-filled retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher) Alex and their manservant Angus head to their family’s hunting lodge to relax recuperate. They find the lodge in shambles and find that the caretaker has […]

A Great Second Entry to a Series

What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher

February 26, 2024 by RouletteGirl 5 Comments

I don’t understand how T. Kingfisher manages to build up so much dread in her Sworn Soldier novellas, but she’s done it again in What Feasts at Night. We rejoin Alex Easton a few months after the terrible ordeal in Ruravia, and Alex pretty clearly has some PTSD from almost being taken over by a sentient fungus. But their friend (and fellow fungus survivor) Miss Potter has asked to use their hunting lodge as a base for mushroom hunting in Gallacia, and so Alex and […]

Do you know the gingerbread man?

A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

February 23, 2024 by dreadpiratekel 1 Comment

I need to start this off by saying this book was perfect to me. Well, almost perfect, but I’m giving it a five-star review because the good outweighed my little nitpicks, and it felt like it was written directly to appeal to me. However, before I start raving about the parts of this book that just made my heart sing, I want to flag that I have read other books by T. Kingfisher, and those were for adults and a little more creepy than this […]
