The Houseguest From Hell

A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher

October 1, 2024 by RouletteGirl Leave a Comment

When you think of T. Kingfisher your mind probably goes to her horror novels first. Maybe you think of What Moves the Dead, or A House With Good Bones. But her fantasy work should not be ignored, and her latest – A Sorceress Comes to Call – is an astonishing mix of fantasy, horror, and Regency novel all in one. Cordelia is a girl who has been abused and controlled by her mother all her life. There are no secrets allowed in their house, nor […]

A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. Ugh, bad ARC reviewer. I’ve had this book finished since the end of August and I’ve been totally dragging my feet on this review for some reason. And it was a good, fun book! You should read it! T. Kingfisher basically has three types of book at this point: 1) Cozy horror, 2) Fantasy romance, and 3) Fairytale-esque dark(ish) fantasy. This book falls into the third category. It […]

One need not be a chamber to be haunted

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher

August 12, 2024 by NatalieH 1 Comment

CBR Bingo: Dun Dun – This is a creepy book with a growing sense of dread. I’ve read a *lot* of T. Kingfisher’s work this year and loved pretty much all of them. Despite this, I’ve been a little hesitant to start with her more horror-focused novels, as it’s not a genre I generally read a lot of, or enjoy all that much. I think I’ve now ran out of her non-horror novels to read (at least until my copy of A Sorceress Comes to […]

“After all, someone as relaxed as he was did not require a long soak to become even more relaxed. It would have been redundant.”

Paladin's Faith by T Kingfisher

We return to a world without the Saint of Steel, but with a lot of the god’s brooding former knights. Plot: Marguerite Florian, who folks might remember from her brief appearance in the first book, is in trouble. Well, she’s a spy, so she’s always in trouble, but this time it’s serious. Because her employer wants her dead. After two years of trying to sort this out herself, per her usual style, she realized that there was only one way to secure her safety. Destroy […]

Roses Are Kinda Horrifying, Huh?

A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher

July 22, 2024 by RouletteGirl Leave a Comment

T. Kingfisher has a knack for taking the most innocent of things (rabbits, tree branches bumping windows, a still & quiet room) and making them horrifying. After reading A House With Good Bones, I may never look at roses the same way again. But let me start from the beginning. Sam is archaeoentomologist, a researcher who studies insect remains at archaeological digs. She had been set to go on a six month dig when it was postponed at the last minute. But her room has […]

A Sorceress Comes to Call by T Kingfisher

What happens when the weirdest cozy fantasy horror novelist you know of becomes inspired by Bridgerton? A Sorceress Comes to Call is what happens. T. Kingfisher blends the Regency romance of Bridgerton with the Goose Girl fairy tale, a very bad mom, a heaping tablespoon horror, shakes it all up and serves it over a middle aged woman and a teenage girl who are willing to fight an evil who isn’t afraid to kill the innocent. I am 8 books deep in a T. Kingfisher binge. I […]
