“That is horrifying and I want to go home,” I said, although I pronounced it, “Ah, I see.”

What Stalks the Deep (Sworn Soldier #3) by T. Kingfisher

Alex Easton is never going to get a break. First, it’s childhood friends of theirs getting slowly consumed by sentient mushrooms. Then it was nearly being killed by something that haunted dreams. And now, it’s America. They never wanted to visit America, especially an abandoned West Virginian coal mine that very well may be haunted. But when Dr. Denton, old friend and fellow survivor of the mushroom horror of Usher House, asks them to help find his cousin―who went missing in that very mine―well, what […]

Dead gods, decapitated corpses and dastardly ex-husbands

Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher

September 26, 2025 by Malin 1 Comment

CBR17 Bingo: Purple (most of the cover, barring the cover image, is a lovely lavender purple) Stephen is one of the paladins of the Saint of Steel (who was a god, despite the name), who died very suddenly and unexpectedly a few years back. No one thought gods could die, and a lot of his paladins killed themselves and caused massive amounts of damage when it happened. Now, Stephen and the six other paladins who remain are housed at the Temple of the White Rat […]

Hemlock & Silver

Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher

I have to say, I really do like T. Kingfisher’s newer writing. I think she still has moments of humor in her books, but this and the last one, “A Sorceress Comes to Call” feels more grown-up in some way I can’t name. I thought that parts of this book seemed to be taking on some of the best parts of the “Universe of the White Rat” but set in a different world/place. There are saints here with all of the gods run over eons […]

Because love isn’t just for the sane, undamaged people

Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher

Bingo: I am counting this for the “White” square in Cannonball Read bingo. I know there isn’t a lot of white on the cover, but technically there is some, and also I just really needed this square so that I could get my first bingo. So there. “If we limited loving to just the sane, undamaged people, the next generation would have about three people in it and presumably humanity would die out shortly afterward.” Stephen was once blessed by a god, protecting the innocent […]

“Potatoes,” he said at last, “do not make gods.”

Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher

Hemlock & Silver is a solid T. Kingfisher read. It’s a Snow White inspired fairytale, told from an unexpected point of view. There is a mystery to be solved, a helping of body horror, and a little bit of romance. The setting is very different from the world of the Temple of the White Rat, and yet it feels comfortably familiar. You don’t know where you are, but you can trust the storyteller to take you somewhere interesting (complimentary). Anja is called a healer, but […]

Read this book to find out what “uh” is a euphemism for! CBRBINGO – Red

Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio ARC. It hasn’t affected the content of my review. The dark fairytale vibes of this were just what I needed yesterday when I flew through this audiobook. Especially since the audiobook I had been listening to previously is the epitome of a three-star read. Such a genuine pleasure to read a T. Kingfisher book after that, rich in atmosphere, fun dialogue, and characters that are easy to like and follow. Plus, her fairytale retellings (of which […]
