Don’t mess with an angry gingerbread cookie!

A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

October 31, 2022 by jomidi 2 Comments

I really adored A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher. This charming young adult fantasy novel was so much fun to read. A shout out to the YA librarian who mentioned how much she had loved this book. Mona is a 14 year old baker who has some limited magic capabilities. She can do things like make gingerbread cookies dance. One day, she finds a dead girl in the bakery and it turns out all magickers in her town are being targeted and […]

Other People Recommended It on CBR and I Also Recommend It!

Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher

CBR14Bingo: Dough (I feel like I remember them eating bread in this book? Also there’s the use of currency. I’m struggling with the last two bingo squares.) I read this based off wicherwill’s recommendation — the idea of Tamora Pierce for adults really hooked me, since I am a life-long Tamora Pierce fan. I’m happy to say that this lived up to the hype! I loaned my copy to my mom, so the recommendation chain is continuing. In the world of Paladin’s Grace, gods are […]

Complain about lack of standalone fantasy and then complain when I find one

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

October 4, 2022 by wicherwill 2 Comments

Unfairly to this book, while I enjoyed the it as a standalone novel (that rare unicorn in the fantasy world), I found myself constantly wishing I was back in The World of the White Rat! I really hope that Kingfisher writes more in that universe, though. It’s the rare sort of one that has both enough scope for imagination but doesn’t require you to pull out your colored pens and post it notes to keep a track of a fictional family free more closely than […]

Paladin's Hope by T. Kingfisher

While I enjoyed this last entry in the Saint of Steel series (especially because we do see our favorites from the prior two books!), in a nutshell I think it suffered from 1) being more of a standalone story (with the smooth skin man issue being solved in the prior novel) and 2) the moral of the story overshadowing the main plot as well. In this novel, we have the story of Gay Galen, who knows for a sure 1000% fact that he doesn’t want […]

Paladin's Hope by T. Kingfisher

September 6, 2022 by Nart Leave a Comment

Our lady and saviour T. Kingfisher is back with another novel, and so very close to the publication of the last one in the series. Someone’s productivity spiked during covid! Plot: Archenhold has it’s first gnole constable. A gnole joined the force to protect other gnoles, but unfortunately things did not quite go the way he expected. When he finds bodies washing up in the city’s river, no one listens and then he’s fired for investigating anyway because racism. But Constable Gnole wants to stop […]

more Saint of Steel awesomeness :D

Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher

August 31, 2022 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Despite having blurbed these books to very many people as I was reading them, I kept finding myself pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them! In this second installment of the Saint of Steel series, still set in the same world of the Rat, we follow another of the former-paladins of the Saint of Steel, who is now deceased. For the first time, we have plot continuity–Istvhan is on the hunt for the strange clay head/golem/creepy men who terrorized us in the prior installation, […]
