Dragons will make thing right

The Weirn Books V02: The Ghost and the Stolen Dragon by Svetlana Chmakova

October 15, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

So, my phone has decided it no longer wants to support some of my online reading apps. Therefore, I must do readings at lunch on my work computer. Well, that can be awkward since sometimes well, you just want to read something that is not maybe 100% okay to read at work… like Blessed Cure by Mario Oliveira, which has WAY too many male dilly-dongs to be work friendly…even if I’m not on the sales floor.  So that leaves me with my children’s books.  And […]

The witch and werewolf go to school and some other things…but it’s not a romance

The Weirn Books, Vol. 1: Be Wary of the Silent Woods by Svetlana Chmakova

November 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Where do witches go to school? Well if you are the kids in this book, and are a special kind of witch called a Weirn, you go to the school the humans do. Only at night, after everyone has left and magic makes it morph into a school for the magical creatures. All the usual suspects are there in Svetlana Chmakova’s graphic novel, The Weirn Books, Vol. 1: Be Wary of the Silent Woods, the mean girl (who used to be a friend and has […]

“Don’t be an enemy to you. Love you. Be your friend.”

Enemies by Svetlana Chmakova

October 16, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

CBR14Bingo: Font (I always really like Chmakova’s handwritten font.) Enemies is the fourth in Svetlana Chmakova’s Berrybrook Middle School series, which I love. I’ve been waiting a few years for the most recent installment and this lived up to my hopes. Felicity lives in the shadow of her little sister Letty, who is always winning science fairs and getting recognition for her academic achievement. In the beginning of the book, Letty teases Felicity that she never finishes anything, and so Felicity sets out to win […]

Who is by your side? And who are you by?

Berrybrook Middle School V05 Enemies by Svetlana Chmakova

July 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Berrybrook Middle School series is a fun series. The cast Svetlana Chmakova created is diverse and deals with classic middle school subjects (such as growing up, boyfriend/girlfriends, best friends, lost friendships, and more) with modern twists. It is realistic, but in goofy way to help keep the serious subjects from going to “deep. These graphic novels are great for the preteen to young teen (10 to 14 the best ages) reading audience. This time in Enemies (the fifth book) we have Felicity and her […]

Dramacon

Two works from the same author, two diametrically opposed opinions from me

Dramacon by Svetlana Chmakova

Nightschool Collector's Edition Vol. 1 and 2 by Svetlana Chmakova

July 11, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Dramacon was one of those foundational comics for me and it’s been years since I read it, so I decided to get the 15th anniversary collector’s edition, as my original copies have long since vanished. Then I decided to get the two Nightschool collector’s editions since I’d never read them. Dramacon held up and I’ll be keeping it, but Nightschool didn’t connect with me and I found it to be the weaker of the works. I know this is in large part because Dramacon so perfectly captures the mid-2000s experience of being at […]

Has to be said: I have a crush on you

Berrybrook Middle School V03 Crush by Svetlana Chmakova

September 30, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Berrybrook Middle School series by Svetlana Chmakova is an interesting look at middle school. It is mostly realistic, though there are a few times when things conveniently happen or work out. A few characters roll over from the other two books in the series, but one does not necessarily need to know any book to read another. In Crush (the third book in the BMS series) we focus on Jorge (seen in Brave and most likely Awkward due to his role as “Sheriff” of the […]
