“Just when you think you’ve seen the worst human beings have to offer, you find out you’re wrong.”

Holly (Holly Gibney, #3) by Stephen King

December 22, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was bit of a messy book that I ultimately enjoyed very much. King takes a lot of smaller pieces (racism, homophobia, cannibalism, the fear of aging, COVID, poetry and writing and the meaning of art) and smushes them together in this little book following Holly Gibney, a character some people love and some people (inexplicably) hate. I happen to love her. I thought this was a great showcase for Holly, even if it wasn’t perfect, and there were small moments I might have tweaked […]

‘Hi! I’m Your Birthday Twin!’ A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES

None of This is True by Lisa Jewell

November 21, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

If this would have been told entirely in mixed media format, I probably would have given it the fifth star. But as is, it was just a really good read. This is going to be one of those annoying reviews where I tell you to go in knowing as little as possible. Generally, it’s about the fallout when two women born on the same day in the same hospital meet again on their 45th birthday and develop a very unique relationship. Alix is a podcast […]

Creepy yet unsatisfying jaunt into a Japanese underworld with games.

Find Him Where You Left Him Dead by Kristen Simmons

November 17, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. I liked this, but there are some pretty significant things keeping me from giving this any higher than three stars. The biggest problem being that several of the twisty details and reveals make no sense, and we get no explanations for them. Some of this I guess I can write off if it turns out this will be a series [note: yes, it will be a series, it […]

I'll Stop the World by Lauren Thoman

November 13, 2023 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I’ll Stop the World is the debut novel by Lauren Thoman, published by Mindy’s Book Studio, the Mindy being Mindy Kaling. It’s clear from her opening note at the beginning of the book that there are twists in this book. I did get one of them because math, but I was really surprised by the second. I admit though when I know there’s a big twist in books I try not to think to hard about it because I just want to enjoy the story […]

“Danger for Black girls was different. It didn’t obey the boundaries of stories. For them, it was always real.”

Jackal by Erin E. Adams

October 24, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 10/30 I am being cursed with three-star reads. The frustrating thing about this one is that for the most part I can’t really pinpoint why it didn’t work for me. So fair warning, this review will probably read like I’m still trying to work that out, because I am. One thing I can say is that after having finished, if this book failed to cohere as a story for me, at least it failed in interesting ways, […]

A solid mystery/thriller set in Wales.

The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 4/30 This got better as it went. I’m glad, because up until a key reveal over halfway through the book, I was pretty emotionally uninvested in what was going on. There so many point of view characters! Too many, I think. Made it a lot harder to get invested. Also, I much prefer mysteries where the people solving the crimes discover things, instead of us as readers discovering them via flashback, which is mostly what happens here. […]
