“What the stories never said: at the end of the day, if a man wants to kill you, he kills you. It’s not on you to convince him not to.”

The Quiet Tenant by Clémence Michallon

January 27, 2024 by narfna 6 Comments

This was a great literary suspense debut, with one pretty big flaw that it feels like the author just really misjudged, but she is clearly a talented lady and I will definitely be reading her next book. Firstly, I just want to complain a little that I can’t even manage to finish a novel in my own language let alone write and finish and PUBLISH a beautiful book in my SECOND*, and then have it be this good. So that’s just me being jealous and […]

Holly by Stephen King

January 19, 2024 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Unlikely private eye Holly Gibney is hired by the mother of a missing woman to track down her daughter. At first, Holly assumes the daughter has simply run away, tired of her overbearing mother, but she soon discovers that something more sinister is at play. I majored in English. Trust me when I say there’s little that sucks the joy out of reading as much as majoring in English, because you’re bound to overthink everything you read. The fun stuff isn’t good enough and the […]

Mixing it up with gentrification, magic, and Mothman

When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole

Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

I'm in Love with Mothman by Paige Lavoie

December 30, 2023 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

CBR15 Passport Challenge: Different genres – suspense thriller, urban fantasy, and monster romance When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole has been in my audible library for way too long. When it was picked for my Lawless book club, it was a sign. I do like to read mystery and thrillers to mix it up between the glut of romances I read. Dubbed by the author as a gentrification thriller, Sydney Green is having a bad time. After a disastrous divorce, she’s moved back in […]

Triple Cannonballing with fugitive Blanche, here to solve your murder mysteries and nose around until all your secrets are exposed.

Blanche on the Lam (Blanche White, #1) by Barbara Neely

December 22, 2023 by narfna 8 Comments

This was published in 1992 so it should have SO MANY more ratings on Goodreads than it does. It was very good! Mystery/crime junkies, consider this your notice. A fun series is waiting for you. There are only four books in it, and this is the first. And if you have KU or Audible, it’s free! I highly enjoyed the audiobook experience, if you are an audiobook person. The book opens with Blanche—who I now love with all my heart—sitting in court waiting to hear […]

Hi, it’s me, the worst book of the year.

Whalefall by Daniel Kraus

December 22, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m not mad just disappointed. Just kidding, I’m pretty mad. I’m going to say what many reviewers have said before me: This is not a book about a man who is swallowed by a whale and has to use science to get out alive. This is a book about a man (a teenager, actually, but more on that below) who has daddy issues real bad, and he happens to be swallowed by a whale also. The parts with the whale are few and far between—it […]
