It’s going to be difficult to draw out 250 words on this book. Not because it was bad. I rather enjoyed it. But because it’s really not much more than a fun, slim hardboiled tale. But I’m game to try. Denis Johnson is considered by many to be one of the best writers of the last few decades. I myself have never read him so I can’t comment on that. I’ve been meaning to get to Tree of Smoke for several years now. This one might encourage […]
I Blame Christopher Pike
Who wouldn’t be excited to be invited to an exclusive party by one of the most popular people? And she said keep it a secret…so they did, from all their friends and families. Unfortunately, almost as soon as they arrive they find themselves facing peril–bad weather, power outages, no reception and oh…everyone is slowly getting murdered one by one. Some of them are friends, some are strangers to one another, what connection do they have? Why are they being murdered and which one of the […]
Close the Book
So I’m back to my “British women in peril” theme, apparently, and this entry is . . . not good. It’s gripping; I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen. And (a) there’s a denouement, and (b) some really key information was missing that would make me feel the level of dread I was supposed to. The heroine of B.A. Paris’s Behind Closed Doors is given a backstory that is emotionally traumatic, but she doesn’t seem to recognize it as trauma, and seems […]
Neither Character Is As Awful As I Thought They Were In the Last Book
Ahhh what glowing praise I’ve bestowed upon the characters in my title. hahaha. I won’t be able to talk much about the plot of this book unless I was willing to talk about some major plot points from the second book because you might want to read that book. I personally never want to read that book ever again as it destroyed two characters that I loved in the first book, A Study in Charlotte. I disliked The Last of August so very much that I wasn’t […]
A brief detour from my Kate Daniels adventures
My friend, who almost exclusively reads best-selling thrillers, has been on my ass for the past year to try and get me to read The Girl On The Train. I’ve finally taken the plunge and, while it was a good read, I must say I think it’s been ever so slightly over-hyped. Rachel takes the same train every day, and most days spots the same couple along her journey into and out of London. Living close to her former home, which is now inhabited by […]
Lizzie Borden took an axe?
4.5 stars. I’d been eyeing this fictionalized account of the Lizzie Borden story for a while so when it was long-listed for the 2018 Women’s Prize for Fiction, I snagged a copy from my library. After reading it, it’s easy to see why it was longlisted. Schmidt is not fucking around with her prose. See What I Have Done is an incredible piece of writing, especially considering that it’s Schmidt’s debut. This is definitely a work of fiction, but there are huge overlaps with actual […]
