Maybe If I Had Started With Book #1

Anything for You by Saul Black

October 22, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Not much to say here, I could not get into this book. Other reviewers mentioned how crude it is, and honestly it is. I just couldn’t root for the main character, Valerie Hart. I don’t know if I would have felt differently if I had read book #1 (The Killing Lessons) and book #2 (LoveMurder). Valerie is obsessed with sex it seems and her ties to this case […]

Not at all what I was expecting. #CBRBingo – Birthday

Firestarter by Stephen King

September 10, 2019 by narfna 8 Comments

I’ve read a fair amount of Stephen King by this point, and this is one of the better ones. Aside from some dated language and ideas (fatphobia, gender essentialism, homophobic/racist language used mostly by bad guys), I liked this one almost as much as I like Misery. Good villains, simple but effective story. Just a really well done horror/suspense novel. The 1980s just ooze from every page. I actually wasn’t anticipating the intensity of this novel. It opens in the middle of things, and our […]

“Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there”

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

September 3, 2019 by Bea Pants 1 Comment

After getting unceremoniously laid off from her job and coming home to find her boyfriend cheating on her, Jules Larsen is forced to couch surf with her good friend until she can get back on her feet again. When she is offered the opportunity to apartment sit at The Bartholomew, one of the most exclusive and notorious buildings in Manhattan for $1000 per week, it seems too good to be true. If you’ve consumed even the smallest amount of fiction in your life, you know […]

Solid Thriller

One Night Gone by Tara Laskowski

August 31, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. This book will be released on October 1, 2019.  Not too much to say except that I found this to be a solid thriller by Tara Laskowski. I have never read a book from her before, but she definitely does a great job with developing the two leads (Maureen and Allison). She sets up the sleepy beach town with dark secrets very well too. I ended up pitying […]

Really Unreal (pun intended)

The Grand Dark by Richard Kadrey

August 15, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 15 (Far and Away) What makes The Grand Dark so interesting is that there’s a lot of recognizable elements to it, but at the same time it’s so very much not reality. Overall, this is a creepy but intriguing world because bits are familiar, but then the rest is either too vague or too unnatural. That’s what makes the whole thing, the setting and the story, something you recognize and at the same time really different- the unfamiliar familiar. It’s also a world apart […]

Some Sisterly Murder

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

August 10, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 13 (Pajiba) I noticed recently that this novel could actually qualify for several different squares, but I’ll be using it for Pajiba, where a review was posted 1/24/2019. I’ve had my eye on the title for a while although I’m not quite sure where I first heard about it. I’m not sure what exactly what I was expecting, but I didn’t get it, not even close. I was not really expecting to enjoy this, firstly because it’s contemporary literary fiction, and secondly it’s written […]
