The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

July 3, 2020 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Bingo: No Money (borrowed from my dad) This year, I was only going to review books I’d never read before, but a few months back another Cannonballer reviewed the entire Dark is Rising series and it made me nostalgic for these books, which I adored as a kid. Plus, I’d never read the final book in the series so I thought I might finally get around to it (I also tried to read the first in the series–The Dark is Rising is the second–but couldn’t […]

The Dark is Rising, Books I-III

Over Sea, Under The Stone by Susan Cooper

The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

Greenwitch by Susan Cooper

It must have been 1980 when I got my first library card to a small branch library in an equally small town. I was 11 or 12. Trips to the library were always an adventure as I was allowed to make the journey by myself. Once, I even got reprimanded by a librarian for returning the books (hopefully only slightly) wet – I had explored the spring streams transporting water from melting snow to faraway places; I carried the books in a plastic bag […]

“Whatever happens, believe that the journey is worth taking, and then you will reach its end.”

Seaward by Susan Cooper

March 13, 2020 by cosbrarian 1 Comment

Cally and Westerly are strangers from opposite ends of the world who are about to be brought together in a place they least expect. Both reeling from grief at losing their parents, they find themselves in a mysterious, magical, and malevolent land that has echoes of their own, but otherwise is beyond imagining. They each have their own shared directive: to find the sea, where their parents implied they could be found. In this land, they meet a majestic, beautiful, and terrifying woman named Tyrannis, […]

Making a theme

Luna and the Moon Rabbit by Camille Whitcher

King Mouse by Cary Fagan

The Shortest Day by Susan Cooper

November 19, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes I find a theme in books that are not really meant to connect them. In the case of Luna and the Moon Rabbit by Camille Whitcher, King Mouse by Cary Fagan and The Shortest Day by Susan Cooper, it is their illustrations. Each is different in their immediate style of art,and also story, but they have an otherworldly element to them that makes them “foggy” and “dream-like” to the viewers eye. Camille Whitcher has created a story that is a dream. Luna’s imagination transforms […]

“In the name of King Arthur, and of the old world before the dark came.”

Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper

CBRBingo11 – Back to School! I’ve read this book about 800 times. The first time I read it was with my fifth grade class, and I’ll forever thank Mrs Cook for introducing us to this wonderful story. I blasted through the rest of the five-book “sequence” after that and it remains my favorite middle grade series (before middle grade was a thing). This year I am participating once again in the Dark is Rising readathon  and so it also made sense for this to be […]

Silver on the Tree cover by Susan Cooper

The end of the Sequence

December 31, 2016 by Loopyker Leave a Comment

Silver on the Tree is the final book in The Dark is Rising Sequence. Here, all the important characters from the Light and the Dark come together for the final battle. I’m not sure if it was because both times I listened to this, it was too late to give it my best attention, or if it was the story itself, but this was my least favourite of the series. Alex Jennings returns as narrator, along with the other characters adding a sense of unity […]
