Never meet your heroes

My Buddy, Killer Croc by Sara Farizan

September 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The focus of having the character of Killer Croc (Waylon Jones) as the “hero” in the Sara Farizan and Nicoletta Baldari graphic novel, My Buddy, Killer Croc, is a familiar but good twist. However, the one thing I was wondering is if the reader will understand that Killer Croc, no matter how “good or nice” he seems, is not a “good guy” due to how he is mostly good to the main character (or seems to be on the surface). There is an interesting nod to […]

Second time is a charm

Nimona by N.D Stevenson

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I first read Nimona by N.D Stevenson in 2019 (but my version had their dead name). My main takeaway from this recent read was how the theme itself has not changed, but our perceptions of it might have. I know mine did. I didn’t even know what a dead name was four years ago. It would never have occurred to me that it is harmful to misgender or dead-name someone. In those few years, a lot has happened, and I hope I have grown past […]

This was fun. Exhilarating. This was my chaos.

Petty (Cape & Cowl 1) by S.A. Sommers

August 9, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

The pharmacy was perfect, and I was only there for the cash. And maybe a new foundation. Eyeliner. Shampoo. Oh, and maybe some chocolate. The manager nodded at one of the employees, who sprinted off to the cosmetics area. “Maybelline!” I called. “Warm ivory!” “Rich alabaster would be better!” she yelled back. ― S.A. Sommers, Petty ************ Farrier folded his arms across his massive chest and leaned against the desk. “We have all these visible heroes. Flying around, running around, leaping over shit. Saving the […]

How is the only her first book, and how long do I have to wait for her second one?

Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

January 3, 2023 by Bothari43 7 Comments

I moved this to the top of my TBR list after reading 1000Oyster’s review, with an assist from Emmalita (thank you!). I agree totally with 1000Oyster’s “I want to recommend it to everyone I know.” In fact, I sent it home with my dad to read on the plane after his Christmas visit, and he also loved it. Plans for world domination and mass destruction take a lot of work, but who does that work? What if there were temp agencies for supervillain henchpeople and […]

One MFing Superhero and a (swear) long review

M.O.M.: Mother of Madness, Volume 1 by Emilia Clarke and Marguerite Bennett

September 7, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I am glad that I did not realize who Emilia Clarke is before I read this book. If you have been under a rock (like I obviously have) she is an actress from Game of Thrones (at least I have heard of that). The why of that is I am a snob when it comes to celebrity books (not completely convinced of quality to be blunt). Even with a psychedelic cover that made me a bit stomach upset, I am glad I gave this graphic […]

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

September 25, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do I like Nimona? Honestly? I am not sure. Let me start at the beginning: Nimona is a girl who invites herself to become the sidekick of Lord Ballister Blackheart, the infamous, has a pretty cool metal arm, villain of the village. Of course, nothing is black and white; there is a side story about Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and why Lord Blackheart became evil but also why Sir Goldenloin is the “hero,” plus our Nimona who is an “impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for […]
