In which I remember what good urban fantasy feels like

September 2, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

While impatiently waiting for the newest Kate Daniels book to come off hold at the library, I remembered that Ilona Andrews doesn’t have just one urban fantasy series, and that The Edge series in particular was recommended to me. So, I dove in. Goodreads summary: “Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic […]

Ugh (a review in Drag Race gifs)

August 15, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 13 Comments

No Rest for the Wicked was almost offensively boring, and when it wasn’t boring, it was offensive. It also has 4.3 stars on Goodreads. I don’t think this book bothers to take itself seriously, so I won’t give it a serious review. Kresley Cole essentially plagiarizes herself with every novel, so I see no problem with taking plagiarism to its logical end and relying mostly on the work of others to get my point across here. I’m going with RuPaul and her girls as my muses […]

Some kind of pun about not being cold on this book

July 22, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

Goodreads summary, for the lazy (me): “Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible […]

Twilight for Adults

May 31, 2014 by genericwhitegirl 2 Comments

“If there really were vampires, what would they do for a living?” That is a question that this book became the unexpected answer to, according to the author on her blog. As for me, although I’ve read that Harkness hasn’t read the popular YA series, I’d dare say this book could be considered a Twilight for adults. Compliment? Or criticism? You decide. But at its simplest, there are vampires, witches, and daemons. (If you’re not sure what a daemon is…think borderline insane, ADHD, wildly creative […]

“I pulled out my submachine gun… On the barrel, pretty white letters spelled out PARTY STARTER.”

April 29, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

Gunmetal Magic is a story about Andrea, best friend to Kate Daniels aka The One the Series Is Named After. Goodreads summarizes the story thusly: “After being kicked out of the Order of the Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea’s whole existence is in shambles. She tries to put herself back together by working for Cutting Edge, a small investigative firm owned by her best friend. When several shapeshifters working for Raphael Medrano—the male alpha of the Clan Bouda, and Andrea’s former lover—die unexpectedly at a […]

To understand the nature of a thing, it must be taken apart

April 20, 2014 by Willynillyone Leave a Comment

In college, four artists named Tess, Henry, Suz, and Winnie began calling themselves the Compassionate Dismantlers whose motto was: “To understand the nature of a thing, it must be taken apart.” Moving to a reclusive lakeside cabin after graduation, they carry out elaborate pranks and escalating acts of vandalism with the intent to take things apart to reveal the underlying truth. The Dismantler schtick often comes off as pretentious and arrogant, but you don’t have to agree with them or even like them, you’re just […]
