Yuri and Victor are Lady Werewolves

July 1, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Moonstruck (Vol 1: Magic to Brew) has the potential to be something like Yuri on Ice, in that the story revolves around a really adorable same sex couple trying to navigate a new and promising relationship. It also features one character with confidence to spare, and another who has a habit of getting overwhelmed by self-doubt. While the core relationship reminds me of the beloved skating anime, there are some significant differences. First, Moonstruck’s main couple, Julie and Selena, who are female, live in a […]

I don’t think I could name all the main characters if my life depended on it

I loved the first season of the anime of Drrr!! (or Durarara!!), and I’m part way through season two; I liked the several manga short sets. I have liked several of the light novels. The light novel series is the only one though that seems to be going a little off the rails. The basic story is a bunch or random people cross paths in the Tokyo neighborhood of Ikebukuro, and eventually their various narratives start coming together. Main characters include high schoolers Mikado, Anri, […]

I guess this is a children’s book?

In 1998 a snopes.com reader coined the term glurge, and I’ve been forever grateful. What is glurge? Snopes has this to say, “Think of it as chicken soup with several cups of sugar mixed in: It’s supposed to be a method of delivering a remedy for what ails you by adding sweetening to make the cure more appealing, but the result is more often a sickly-sweet concoction that induces hyperglycemic fits.” The website tvtropes.org claims the term derives from the sound of someone throwing up. […]

Post-Apocalyptic Tale of Wonder

December 26, 2017 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’ve been meaning to read The Girl with All the Gifts since the film came out last year. As usual, I kept putting it off until one of my book clubs assigned it. This was voted as the Mocha Girls Read supernatural pick for October. I read nearly half of it in one day, finally finished it up in December. I’m glad that I did, still a wild ride despite hearing spoilers during the in person discussion. I’m not a fiercely against them when it comes […]

I feel like Alicia Silverstone in Clueless: Way harsh, Tai.

I was provided a copy of The Gloaming: Rise of the Stealth Vampire Elder by ML Worthingham free of charge in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was all… YES. FREE BOOK. WHAT ISN’T TO LIKE? Then I started actually reading the thing. The title should have been the first clue as to what I’d find, but honestly my mind was still stuck on “yay! Free book!” Doesn’t it sound like the title of an Edith Wharton novel or something? Or maybe a […]

Next time the Library, not Bookstore

August 20, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I put off reviewing this one because I didn’t want to get my first full intentional Cannonball with a mild disappointment.  I’d picked it up because I wanted something to read on a trans-Atlantic flight but ended watching Moana (cute although the songs weren’t as awesome as advertised) and Assassin’s Creed (wow, was that a bad movie) instead. I picked it up to read a few days later because the premise sounded interesting and it was billed as the first installment of a best-selling series. […]
