Spike as a wizard detective is the everything I needed in 2020.

Storm Front by (The Dresden Files #1)

December 30, 2020 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

Let me get this out of the way. For the life of me, I struggle to identify the difference between science fiction and fantasy. I think wizards/vampires lands us firmly in the fantasy camp, but I’m not certain. I feel better having confessed this. That out of the way, let me give a thanks to the CBR community. I was looking for a new audio book to sink into and went searching through posts on the CBR facebook page and found a post from someone […]

You won’t have a ghost of a chance

Séance Tea Party by Reimena Yee

December 1, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Séance Tea Party is a tale of not wanting to grow older. Of course, this theme has been done before. However, Reimena Yee’s graphic novel is a fun way to re-introduce this idea. Lora is a “late bloomer” and when she is having a séance tea party, she gets a surprise: a girl shows up. And just because she is a ghost does not stop the two of them from becoming fast friends. The trials of growing up are done in sweet, traditional graphic novel […]

I finally understand the struggle of non-English speakers who have to wait for books to be translated

Ghostsitter - A Crazy Inheritance by Tommy Krapweiss

October 25, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Okay, so this series is originally written in German. The first one was translated into English in an Audible Original (but not the other 7) and they made no attempt to Americanize it!  Hooray!  (They also never explicitly say they’re in Germany, which may have helped clear up some confusion in the beginning.)   Fourteen-year-old Tom is living his normal life with his adopted grandma when one day they get a notice that his great-uncle Heinrich has died, and Tom needs to attend the will […]

Pretty young things solve supernatural murders in 1920s NYC (Complete bingo card!)

The Diviners by Libba Bray

October 11, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR12 Bingo: The Roaring 20s (could easily be used for Violet as well)   17-year-old Evangeline “Evie” O’Neill can sense people’s secrets if she holds a personal object belonging to them and concentrates hard on it. She becomes decidedly unpopular in her home town when she gets drunk at a party and reveals that one of the town’s golden boys knocked up a hotel maid and paid her to have the problem “dealt with”. He accuses her of slander and threatens to sue her family. Evie […]

Dirty Half Dozen Part Two

The Little Ghost Who Lost Her Boo! by  Elaine Bickell

My Little Fox by Rick Chrustowski

Hedgehog Needs a Hug by Jen Betton

Gator, Gator, Gator! by Daniel Bernstrom

Fear the Bunny by Richard T. Morris

The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin

October 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Another dirty-half dozen of picture books for your viewing pleasure: We start with The Little Ghost Who Lost Her Boo! by Elaine Bickell with some far out illustrations by Raymond McGrath. When I first saw the cover I was thinking, “Huh. Well that’s kind of different.”  And it turned out to be just a cute anytime book, but one that would be a great Halloween story.  It is just about a ghost looking for their lost “voice” or “boo.” And while it is abot a Ghost […]

Summarizing the entire series after reading the last five books in it

Amulet V04 The Last Council by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V05 Prince of the Elves by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V06 Escape from Lucien by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V07 Firelight by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V08 Supernova by Kazu Kibuishi

September 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ages ago I read book one and two of the Amulet series. Kazu Kibuishi’s illustrations are fun, the storylines familiar and it seemed like a good series to get involved with. After all, only 8 (now 6) books and they were short so what could go wrong? Well, it wasn’t “gone wrong” but it is an odd thing and one I’m a bit embarrassed to admit. Either I missed book three or I have absolutely no memory of it. And that has colored the rest […]
