And so I disliked a book written by Gene Luen Yang.

July 6, 2016 by narfna 7 Comments

I’ve read all of Gene Luen Yang’s comics, so it was a no-brainer that I would be reading his version of Superman. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it. Actually, I’ve never really enjoyed a Superman comic, so this may be on me. But before we get to the actual comic, a complaint. WTF, why is the DC comics universe so messed up??? I mean, it took me an hour after reading this to determine which version of Superman I was reading, where it was in the […]

A task too large for even a super man.

I wouldn’t call myself a fan of comic books. I collected them when I was young, but it was mainly for their art. There are some stories that I still treasure the memory of, and there are even some I’ve thought of revisiting for the Cannonball, but I haven’t really felt the need to do so. These days, most of my superhero interactions come from whatever the latest release from the MCU is. But, the other day a friend of mine posted a hypothetical choice […]

This was a terrible book.

I mentioned in my review of the first volume of Grounded that I hadn’t read a Superman comic since at least 1997, so this series being my first in that span of time is in retrospect, a tragedy. This book is not good. It makes me question whether or not they even make Superman comics that are good. I have some ostensibly good ones on my TBR list, but as far as I have actual knowledge, Superman in comics is boring, pompous, overwritten, and stupid. […]

My boredom is assuaged, but there is no abation for my ennui

I read this book more than a month ago, and it somehow got lost in the shuffle. Which is weird, because I quie enjoyed it. This is a world driven mad by superpowers gifted to a select few. Instead of an idyllic world of good vs evil, however, Sanderson has created a world where the superpowered beings have become our dominant and oppressive overlords. They’ve set up centers of power, where the most mighty can attract underlings to do their bidding. Instead of Superman helping […]

Superman goes for a walk.

November 15, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve read a Superman comic, and this happened to be sitting next to Ms. Marvel when I went to pick it up at the library, so I checked it out. It was . . . interesting. It had the typical JMS positives and negatives. Some parts were great, and some parts were soooo not. Actually, the last time I read a Superman comic was the wedding issue, what, back in 1997? I think that might have been the last […]

Lois Lane, never change.

June 26, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

So on the Batman/Superman divide, spectrum whatever you want to call it, I’m on the side of the Man in Blue. Have been since the fifth grade when Lois & Clark was my favorite TV show and my mom let me put Superman’s shield on my retainer. Also, the dark and broody thing has never really done it for me. I’m pretty much in agreement with John Green on this matter (“Batman is just a rich guy with an affinity for bats who is playing […]
