The illustrations are nice.

Green Arrow: Stranded by Brendan Deneen

August 26, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Green Arrow: Stranded is a cozy book, yet I was unsatisfied at the end. Is there a sequel? Why should I like these people? Who are these people? Ollie Queen has an interesting set of morals: don’t kill the wild boar trying to kill you and the others but the snake is fair game? The plane crashes but four of the five people survive, but you never find the pilot? Then again, we never did see them, just some snide comments from the father of […]

A Wonder of a Woman

Nubia: Real One by L. L. McKinney

August 19, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Overall, Nubia: Real One is a modern telling of the superhero genre with concerns for today. While the art was not a hundred percent “my thing” it is clever and fits the tone of the story. Robyn Smith created illustrations that are classical graphic novel with comic overtones and works as both a blanket to hold the text and characters and be independent of it. I am not sure if they have reinvented the story of Nubia (outside of probably giving her two moms and […]

Mister Miracle:  The Great Escape by Varian Johnson

August 8, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I read a meme on Facebook that was talking about how if you call yourself a “geek” and like Superheroes/graphic novel/comics, but have a problem with Captain America being black, or Ms. Marvel Muslim, or Thor a woman, then you are not a “real geek” but a racist. Controversial statement to follow. I have a problem. Not because they are black or Muslim, or female, but because to me, it feels lazy. The “we need diversity” is good and we should make it happen, […]

If Mr. Fantastic and Captain Marvel were combined

Ms. Marvel, Volume One: No Normal by G. Willow Wilson

July 18, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Series Level 1 She might be a superhero with pretty cool powers, but she is still 16 and has a curfew. I have read one other Ms. Marvel graphic novel/comic and was not totally impressed. I think that was because the character in the other book was a kid and Kamala in Ms. Marvel, Volume One: No Normal is a teenager, and somehow being a superhero is more believable to me if you are at least old enough to drive. I had no idea […]

Hijinks and Goop people

Weird Kid by Greg Van Eekhout

July 11, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The main character in Weird Kid is an alien, therefore expect a comedy of errors to happen. There is an interesting story arch that shows that that things are a not to subtle representation of puberty and the changing we go through in middle school. It is very unbelievable (though there are two interesting pieces of realism that was surprising). It is also funny. An adult can forgive the bumps that occur as kids 10 and up will get a kick out of everything happening. […]

Superheroes the Next Generation

Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven (Teen Titans, #3) by Kami Garcia

June 13, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Finally we start to get into the meat and potatoes of the story of Raven and Beast Boy (or Garfield/Gar) with Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven (Teen Titans, #3). The first two books were Raven’s story “to now” and Beast Boy’s story “to now.” In fact, the third volume starts where the other two books left off. Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo create a Before They Were the Superhero’s The Teen Titans. Garcia makes a fresh story about teens coming of age. Just because […]
