Whole new meaning to Under the Sea

Mera: Tidebreaker by Danielle Paige

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not decided why the cover of Mera: Tidebreaker turned me off to the book. In fact, the whole story turned me off. I have never been an Aquaman fan, so maybe that was why. Maybe I was afraid that Danielle Paige would make her too “Girl Power-She-Woman-Man-Hater.” Maybe I was just really envious of her red hair. Regardless of my misgivings, when I finally found a copy of this graphic novel, I was willing to give it a shot. And I am glad […]

Superheroes 101

We Are the Justice League! (DC Justice League) by DC Comics

March 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like Super-Heroes. But for movies, I tend to be Marvel over DC, but my heart will always belong to Adam West, Burt Ward, Frank Gorshin, Julie Newmar, Burgess Meredith and Cesar Romero. Yes, 1960’s Batman with all the BAM! POW! And KRACK! I will always have a soft sport for DC characters. And in We Are the Justice League by DC Comics/Random House, your child (grades first to (lower) third grade) can be introduced or continue their love. Included in We Are the Justice […]

The Not so Environmental Planeteers for the 21st Century

The Dysasters: The Graphic Novel by P.C. Cast

February 17, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you mix two modern teens with modern attitudes and who have powers to control elements; then learn that there are others like them you get the less-than-politically correct Planeteers for the 21st century. The Dysasters: The Graphic Novel by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast is the adaption of their novel series. Foster Stewart and Tate “Nighthawk” Taylor could not be more different. Foster is the foster (or adopted, it changes depending on who is talking/what page you’re on) daughter of a man who experimented […]

Yes, I know there are two similar images but couldn’t decide which one I liked more as art is the strongest part of the books

Angel Catbird Volume 2: To Castle Catula by Margaret Atwood

Angel Catbird Volume 3: The Catbird Roars by Margaret Atwood

February 13, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Angel Catbird is like a car crash: you want to, but you just cannot look away. There are too many puns and way too long in places. There are cat, vampire, rat, bird and more, puns. There is good-old-fashioned pulp fiction streaming across the pages. Not to mention a modern-to-look-at set of illustrations that are seeped deep in the old school vividly colored and uniquely detailed comic illustrations. Margaret Attwood’s text and Johnnie Christmas illustrations saturate Volume 2 and Volume 3 with these elements. Then, […]

You’ll probably not be surprised but I liked this book a lot

Teen Titans: Raven by Kami Garcia

January 20, 2020 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

As you can imagine, I like ravens. I also like the idea of the character Raven from the Teen Titans. I do not consider myself an expert on the either subject. I just enjoy them. I like the element of mystery, cleverness and magic around them. And the character herself seems to have an interesting and unique path. With the graphic novel (ages at least 12 and up) Teen Titans: Raven Kami Garcia took a character comic and graphic novel lovers around the community know […]

Entertaining Story But With Missed Opportunities

Supernova by Marissa Meyer

December 28, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While  I was a bit disappointed with the second novel in this trilogy, I wanted to see how it would end, so I picked up Supernova, the final book.  Overall, it was an improvement over Archenemies, and there was more positive than negative, though I still think there were a few missed opportunities. At the end of the last novel, Nova had set things into motion that would blow her cover and put the Anarchists back into a position of power.  While Nova successfully stole […]
