Ricky and his pal Robot

Ricky Ricotta V01 Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot by Dav Pilkey and Dan Santat

October 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I need two ratings for the book, Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot. One rating for me and one for the readers it is aimed at. My rating is a 2 as I did not care for things. There was nothing that was “exciting” to me personally. The illustrations were the bright spot as they are bold and well colored, but not overly detailed so they do not distract from the story but support it. However, if I was recommending to younger readers (as young as five […]

The other Amazonian princess

Nubia: Too Real by L. L. McKinney

September 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do you do when the reader copy you are reading is missing the last 20 pages or so? You holler loudly and say, “Darn you whomever made this reader copy! I need to know what happens in Nubia: Too Real by L. L. McKinney and illustrated by Robyn Smith.” You then say, “Well I guess late September/early October won’t come soon enough!” And then you tell yourself you’ll be first in line to get the finished copy and find out what happens to our […]

Dan! Dan! (Santat)! Is the man

Don't Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson

The Day the Books Disappeared by Joanna Ho and Caroline Kusin Pritchard

All the Hulk Feels by Dan Santat

May 16, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like the illustrator Dan Santat. While I like the colors, the silliness and the medium to busy details, I have never been sure exactly what draws me. The nice thing is, there are a lot of titles (some he is the author as well of), to explore to figure it out.  And there are three new/recent ones that you should try out to see if you can help explain it to me. First, there is  Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson. It is a […]

Why does Superman always get top billing?

Superman's Good Guy Gang by Rob Justus

March 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Perhaps I should not admit I read something like Superman’s Good Guy Gang by Rob Justus as it is, well, a bit on the less than mature side. This is not for the adult reader who likes a more sophisticated book, but if your child (or you) are a typical five to eight-year-old who has a slightly goofy sense of humor and likes superheroes then this is for you. So, in other words I will admit I read it and say I know there’s an […]

She’s bad, bad Big Barda! Baddest gal in the whole of Apokolips

Barda by Ngozi Ukazu

January 17, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I do not know enough about Barda to understand all the ins and outs of her story. However, you can pick up some of it (the idea she is not the villain Granny Goodness wants, who Granny is, the Furies, etc.), in Ngozi Ukazu’s graphic novel of the same name. Some of the world was lost on me (why is the prisoner Scott Free the way he is? How did he get his name? What about the background he has with another person of Barda’s […]

He thought his girlfriend kept him grounded, but he got a shock one night

Static Up All Night (volume 1) by Lamar Giles

December 17, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Static Up All Night (volume 1) by Lamar Giles and illustrated by Paris Alleyne is a nice teen superhero story.  Our main character, Virgil, is trying to balance a normal life and being a superhero. Set in the DC universe, we have mutant humans (mostly still looking human) that were created by a supposedly safe gas. Afterwards, those who made it were given some sort of powers (one girl hasn’t slept literally since it happened, so she has time to study, do multiple jobs, and […]
