I saw somewhere that re-reading or re-watching things we’ve enjoyed in the past is great for anxiety, because you’ve already experienced it.  You know exactly what’s going to happen.  And a pandemic is full of anxiety, so a lot of us have discovered this comfort!*     Someone on Facebook was asking for recommendations for an audiobook to listen in the car with her 13- and 15-year-old sons, so I recommended Super Powereds: Year 1 by Drew Hayes.  I remembered that the story was fantastic and […]

Super Powereds Year Four, by Drew Hayes

All good things must come to an end

August 1, 2018 by crystalclear 3 Comments

This book is a kind of bittersweet, in that it’s the last one in the main series.  It’s a crazy long four books (well, five if you count the spinoff**) and it truly is the end of a journey.  We’ve seen these characters grow from immature teens to adults who are willing to make tough decisions, and who are tangled in things far beyond them.  The four years (or more) you spend at college change who you are as a person, and we get to […]

Lucky 13 and Heroes are still fun

July 27, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Usually by this point with an author, I’ve gotten bored/annoyed or they’ve gotten predictable. This is Drew Hayes book number 13 for me, and no author fatigue in sight. The only other author I can think of with this kind of reading record for me is Terry Pratchett. Drew Hayes is not Sir Terry, but not in a bad way. Even though Corpies is set in the same world as Super Powereds, and includes some character crossover, there’s still enough new characters and situations that […]

The Harry Potter Marvel crossover I never knew I’d love

February 18, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

So far I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read by Drew Hayes, including Forging Hephaestus, NPCs, and the series following Fred the vampire accountant. I figured the time was right to try his other series, Super Powereds. After reading Year 1, my conclusion is only to wonder why I waited so long. I do have to day though, I can totally see the author of Forging Hepheastus in this, and a little NPCs, although I do realize Super Powereds Year 1 came out before either of those […]

Just like Thanksgiving dinner, the sides are the best part!

December 30, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Corpies is a spinoff of the Super Powereds books.  It fits between Super Powereds Year 2 and 3 – we hear a little bit about it in Year 3, but not much.  Hershel and Roy’s father, the hero called Titan, has decided to finally get off his ass and return to hero work.  He had previously left the hero business, or the Life, after a sex scandal ruined his reputation.  Not only was Titan caught having sex with someone other than his wife, but it […]

They way this one ended, the next is going to be one hell of a show

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Aw man.  Trying to review this without spoilers is going to be kind of hard.  We’ve entered into junior year, and things are going to be way different now!  At the end of last year, Nick was far too clever for his own good, and now everyone is paying the price, in a way.  We learn about everyone’s eventful summers and we see how it was an important one for each person’s growth. While we tend to focus on our main cast of characters, others […]
