White Bones (Katie Maguire #1) by Graham Masterton

June 8, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Have you ever seen these pictures of a professional illustrator who let her four year old finish her drawings? That’s exactly what this book is like: it starts off well, a little weird but well done, and then in the second half of the book it’s amateur hour. On steroids.  On a remote Irish farm, eleven bodies are discovered: their bones are haphazardly strewn about underneath a barn. Weirdly, each thigh bone has a hole in it with a small doll on a wire looped […]

Breasting Boobily

Believe Me by JP Delaney

March 7, 2019 by Zirza 9 Comments

There’s a blurb on the back of Believe Me from a review by The Daily Mail: ‘Slick, sexy, suspenseful and smart.’ It’s the Daily Mail so this should be taken with a grain of salt either way, but I can think of a few better s-words to describe this novel. Soporific. Sophomoric. Sexist. Shitty. And let’s not forget the main one: stupid. So very stupid. That isn’t to say there’s nothing to enjoy there, but it’s enjoyable the way a really bad film is: it […]

Is Good a Euphemism for Stupid?

June 29, 2015 by Melina 6 Comments

As you can see I picked up just about any book that someone said was like Gone Girl or Girl on the Train this summer…and I’ve been burned people, burned I say!  But YOU may love it because it looks like my opinion is not the popular sentiment. Mia Dennett is a 25 year old art teacher and daughter of a judge.  One evening, after her boyfriend stands her up she makes the decision to go home with a man named Colin whom she meets […]

On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot. ‘Tis a silly place.

June 28, 2015 by Zirza 3 Comments

Fun fact: the ‘doom’ in ‘doomsday book’ has little to do with the word ‘doom’ as in ‘gloom and doom’, but comes from the Latin ‘domus’ or house. I have to admit, though, that it sounds wonderfully creepy, which I suppose is the only reason Connie Willis chose it as the title to her novel as it has nothing to do with the early medieval document. It’s not even set in the same period of time. The year is 2055, the place is Oxford. Historians […]
