Stay curious my friend

We, the Curious Ones by Marion Dane Bauer

July 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story We, the Curious Ones is a poetic look at how science was born. Well, that is how I interpret Marion Dane Bauer’s book (due early November 2023). The ways we start to look at the world changes as we gain knowledge from those who dared to question the norm. We realize things such as we are not the center of the universe, but a part of one. And other factual pieces of information we take for granted today. Mostly the story is straightforward, […]

What you do see that helps what you do

In a Garden by Tim McCanna

April 7, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

With recent events, I am sure more than one person has decided to start a garden or at least start working on their garden. In a Garden is a sweet and cozy story about what happens in the garden. Or the things that go on in a garden that you cannot see. Follow the life of a garden in this picture book filled with goodies. For the adult reader, this book is overly simple. However, for the child reader, not only does a garden come […]

Snow books to cozy up with

Snow Globe Wishes by Erin Dealey

Snow Much Fun! by Nancy Siscoe

December 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Regardless if it is snowing or not, this time of year I see and occasionally want to read, books about snow. And because it is that time of year, there are all types of books that fit the bill. But two new ones I found recently was, Snow Globe Wishes and Snow Much Fun! Both books are adorable looking but fell a little short for my personal enjoyment. However, I know that there are several people out there who are looking for these exact two […]

How to Read a Book by Kwame Alexander’

June 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I wanted to read Kwame Alexander’s picture book as I had just finished Crossover the Graphic Novel and wanted to experience another genre he had written. Sometimes an author excels at novels, sometimes picture books and a rare few can cross over into any format. I think Alexander is one that can easily flow into any format. The entire book is a piece of art. How to Read a Book might be more sophisticated than the traditional picture book crowd, but everyone will find something […]

Introducing Your Friend and Mine: The Honeybee

August 10, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This a solid 4.5 as the only issue I have is that I would have liked more facts at the end or even more within the text of the story. This is a poetic story about our friend, The Honeybee. Kirsten Hall and Isabelle Arsenault have created a story that the adult is not going to mind rereading. It has a lot to it, and while there is not a lot of traditional action, this is a lot going on. The rhyming text reminded me […]
