Review #2: 1203 Pages of Awesome

The Bonehunters by Steven Erikson

November 11, 2023 by Monty Leave a Comment

The sixth book in an epic fantasy ten book series, reading this was a no-brainer for me. I have already read the first five books, and mostly loved them, so how could I not continue? The Bonehunters publisher’s summary is as follows (spoilers hidden): “The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress […]

The Speed Bump in an Otherwise Smooth Ride

House of Chains by Steven Erikson

June 5, 2019 by janetfaust 3 Comments

I started reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen last year. I wanted to read a completed epic fantasy series and had heard a lot of good things about it. I had some Audible credits so I got Gardens of the Moon and soon enough, I was engaged, but a bit left behind somehow. This series isn’t something you can just casually listen to as an audio book and really hope to get. I made it about two-thirds of the way through the first audio […]

Book 2: Malazan Book of the Fallen

Deadhouse Gates is the second in Erikson’s Malazan series. It is dark, you guys. This might be the wrong time of my life for me to read it. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Gardens of the Moon. The things I enjoyed in the first book are found here again – incredibly world building, dropping the reader into the midst of a series of rich plots and being expected to just pick it up, and some characters that are not just tropes. […]

Book 1: Malazan Book of the Fallen

January 30, 2017 by llp 2 Comments

When I was looking for new books to try, my friend recommended Morden’s Metrozone series and the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. Of course, the Metrozone series veered off the rails for me, but I am buying what Erikson is selling here. Plus, Canadian! I started reading this on the plane to Hawaii, and although I had been warned by both my friend and Erikson’s foreword, I was surprised at how this book just drops the reader right in the middle of a very […]
