I downloaded The Gingerbread Girl as an audiobook. which lasted about 2 1/2 hours, so I’m not sure if it’s a short story or a novella or falls somewhere in between. As far as Stephen King stories go, it’s a little dull (she says of a tale about a serial killer), but not a bad way to kill (ha!) a couple of hours. Emily’s daughter dies of crib death at two months old, and Emily goes a bit crazy. She begins running, and doesn’t stop until […]
You murdered yourself. I just carried the bullet a while.
I decided like, I don’t know, six months ago? that I was going to read ALL THE STEPHEN KING, so I was eventually going to read this book (and all his others) no matter what. Deciding which books to read first was the main thing. I decided to read this one first (and Misery and The Stand, come to think of it) because I read his On Writing back in November, and he talks about the process of writing all three of them. The way he […]
Blaine the Train is a Pain
In the third installment of the Dark Tower series, the gunslinger and his companions (Eddie, Susannah) continue their journey towards the tower. Roland feels like he’s slowly losing his mind, as he struggles to reconcile the events of the first book and the second — in one, Jake the boy dies and in the other, he lives. Meanwhile, in New York in the 1970s, Jake, too, feels like his mind has split into two separate narratives that he cannot combine. “Roland grabbed Jake and hauled him […]
Secret Electricity Seems Like Scary Electricity
I used to be a Stephen King junkie around 5th-8th grade. Seriously, one summer I stayed up every night until about 3 am reading by flashlight (and ruining my damn eyes) so that I could finish IT (I still remember the crushing feeling of disappointment at the end of that novel for me…but that’s ok, I read something else and I was sated). I’ve always continued to like Stephen King but I haven’t actively sought out any of his newer books (aside from Joyland and […]
This cockadoodie book.
“As always, the blessed relief of starting, a feeling that was like falling into a hole filled with bright light. As always, the glum knowledge that he would not write as well as he wanted to write. As always the terror of not being able to finish, of accelerating into a brick wall. As always, the marvelous joyful nervy feeling of journey begun.” “But characters in stories DO NOT just slip away! God takes us when He thinks it’s time and a writer is God […]
So now we’ve got the gang together…
How nice that my cannonball should hit on one of my all-time favorite books! After we finish chasing the man in black around the desert to the sea, The Drawing of the Three opens on Roland, passed out on a beach. He’s given a lovely wake up call by one of the greatest King monsters ever, the lobstrosities (whose persistent questioning was truly terrifying on audiobook — nice work), who tear off a couple of his fingers and his big toe. Roland is supposed to be seeking out his ka, […]
