Let me tell you what I wish I’d known, when I was young and dreamed of glory

August 18, 2016 by baxlala 8 Comments

I finished this book weeks (months?) ago and am still not really sure what to say about it. It’s The Stand. Like. Everyone knows about it, yeah? It seems silly to even attempt a review but attempt I shall. The Stand is about good versus evil, the perseverance of the human spirit, and hope. It’s also got some really super gross parts, and some bits that have NOT stood the test of time and made me cringe because PHRASING, Stephen King, PHRASING. (That was supposed […]

“End of watch is what they call it, but Hodges himself has found it impossible to give up watching.”

July 25, 2016 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

I waited for months for this to come out, spent another month on the on-hold list at my library, devoured the whole thing in 48 hours and insisted on returning it immediately for the next Stephen King fan. So…you’re not going to get an unbiased review here. “It’s about how some people carelessly squander what others would sell their souls to have: a healthy, pain-free body. And why? Because they’re too blind, too emotionally scarred, or too self-involved to see past the earth’s dark curve […]

More Supernatural Than I’d Like

July 6, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

As I’ve mentioned before, I didn’t read Stephen King’s work until this year, and I lucked out in starting with Mr. Mercedes, which was book one in this trilogy. End of Watch is the final book, and explores more supernatural themes than the previous two. If you’ve read the first two: so Retired Detective Hodges is not feeling good, and we find out that has pancreatic cancer. Not a great diagnosis. He and his partner Holly are still running their private investigation business, and Jerome […]

YOU GUYS, HI. THIS BOOK WAS SO THIS BOOK. WHAT WORDS TO USE I DO NOT KNOW. MUCH FLOUNDERING. BOOK HAS CREATED NOOK FOR ITSELF IN BRAIN AND IMPRINTED DEMON SHADOW IN NEURAL CELLS FOREVER. CAUSES TO TYPE ALL CAPS OH NO. Okay, I’ll stop now. But seriously. THIS BOOK, THIS @(*&#$%* BOOK. I have been meaning to read The Stand for yearrrrs now, but I kept putting it off. Ever since I discovered about four to five years ago that Stephen King’s storytelling was […]

Mostly Stephen King, but a little bit of Adolph Hitler. Now with a Bernie Sanders reference!

July 4, 2016 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

The Running Man (1982) by Stephen King (3.5 stars) -not previously reviewed for the CBR Written as Richard Bachman, King’s introduction to this edition lays out his reasons for creating the pseudonym and, ultimately, killing him off following the discovery. Given his reasoning (which is basically that he wanted to try something different and test his success), I’m left wondering if King has other pseudonyms out there we don’t know about. I’ve wondered that about J.K. Rowling, as well. I’ve never really been interested in […]

Damn you, Uncle Stevie. I’m not ready for these books to end.

June 21, 2016 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

The adventures of Retired Detective Bill Hodges and his friends have come to an end, and I’m sad. I didn’t expect a whole lot when Uncle Stevie announced that he was working on a trilogy of mystery novels a few years ago. But I adored Mr. Mercedes, and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. And I really liked 99% of Finders Keepers…it was only that 1% about stupid Brady Hartsfield moving things around with his mind that bugged me. So, I was kind of irked when […]
