I’ve been reading and rereading Lawrence Block’s Bernie Rhodenbarr series for years (like, probably close to 20 years — they were on the shelf above Lillian Jackson Braun’s books at my library and I picked them up at some point in middle school when I’d exhausted The Cat Who…) but I’ve never really read anything else by him — although he’s published quite a bit. I saw his name on this story collection, along with some other favorites (Stephen King, Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child, and Craig Ferguson, […]
I think I love this series.
I wrote my initial little placeholder review where I promised to have a full review up for this book by the afternoon approximately five minutes before I learned that Carrie Fisher had died, and to be up front about it, that news has completely done a wampus on my head, and the review I’d been planning on writing is now not going to happen, because my brain just wants to be sad right now. I don’t know what I’m about to write about this crazy […]
It doesn’t get much more epic than this
So. The Stand. I have been listening to The Stand on audiobook since before Thanksgiving. It’s 48 hours long. I’m so glad that I was able to to hit my 5th Cannonball of the year on this particular book because I love it dearly, but have never had a chance to review it for Cannonball. So here we go! “Show me a man or a woman alone and I’ll show you a saint. Give me two and they’ll fall in love. Give me three and they’ll […]
What a weird, dark little book.
So maybe you’ve heard this old story about how to boil a frog. You dump a frog in boiling water, he’s going to jump right out. You put cool water in the pot with lil froggie and slowly heat it up while he’s inside? Maybe he won’t sit there and boil to death. He’ll jump out eventually if things get too hot. But he’s gonna stay in there a good long while if you play your cards right. It’s a useful little anecdote; can be […]
Narfna, you’re my book lobster. Thanks for knowing exactly what I needed today.
I just got home (from book shopping, naturally) and found a lovely package from Narfna waiting for me. So amazing that she just KNEW I had finished The Wise Man’s Fear just last night and was in need of a new fantasy to keep me busy. Also, how gorgeous is that Catherynne Valente book? Can’t wait to read it. And Night Shift!!!! Amazing. Thanks so much. Your choices were perfect. Cannonball book exchange truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
Star Wormwood blazes and each one of you that steps out that door will be torn apart!
Stephen King and I are still in love! My introduction this year to his writing involved some seriously epic shit, with It and The Stand, and now I get to The Mist, and it’s super short, and takes place over 2 days, and doesn’t actually end? Gah. I’m not saying I’m unsatisfied; I’m actually mostly saying that I’m glad that I did this one when I did it, because now there’s a whole new King to love. The man is super prolific, so I’m delighted that […]
