Well, I failed at my goal of finishing this series before the movie came out on August 15th*. Perhaps Ashley of past years could have finished the remaining three books in the next thirteen days (as of actually finishing the book), but Present Ashley is certainly not capable of it. *Will not now be seeing movie. Very upset at genius casting of Idris Elba entirely wasted. I was still going to give it a chance until I read they’d made Jake the protagonist and dumbed […]
A Bunch of Stephen King Re-reads
I recently drove to Maine on a road trip. Having read a bunch of Stephen King in my life and driving with someone who’d never read any of his books, I wanted to map the books a little along the path. These particular books were chosen for two main reasons: they’re not “scary” and they were available via Overdrive for the ride. The linking sort of worked out. If you read The Running Man on the way up, you follow the book, and if you […]
Lucky #13
Writing a mystery with no solution is an easy thing to do. All you need is some inscrutable pieces of information and no way for a reader, or the characters, to be able to piece the whole thing together in a way that brings satisfaction. Bad writers do this kind of thing all the time and try to pass it off as enigmatic. It takes a master to write a mystery with no solution and still make the journey feel worthwhile to the reader. That […]
Some moments are beyond imagination.
Okay, I’m back. I haven’t lost my mind, or my grip on reality. Everything’s fine. It took me a long time to read this final installment of “The Dark Tower” series. Sure, it’s super long, but it’s shorter than a few of the other installments. I just truly didn’t want it to end, so I stretched it out, found distractions and procrastinations, and delayed the inevitable. This final chapter is less full of revelation, and doesn’t so closely ressemble a conspiracy theorist’s corkboard with pushpins […]
Gonna Leave This in The Desert
I think before I start this review I need to begin with two disclaimers. The first, I’m not a fan of Stephen King. I’ve read a couple of his books and they just doesn’t wow me. I don’t hate his books, but I don’t really read them unless they’re one of the few choices in some beach rental and I’ve forgotten any other reading material. To give you an idea, I stopped reading Salem’s Lot about halfway through because I got bored and didn’t feel […]
Hi. I’m Badkittyuno, and I’ve fallen behind again…
Hi. Sorry. I really thought I was like 10 reviews behind and it turned out to actually be 19. So then I started up this list of reviews…and didn’t post it…and now I’m 26 behind. I would blame my kids/divorce/life, but really — I’d much rather read than write! Also, I’ve been working from home a lot and doing laundry instead of writing reviews (which is what I do when I get bored at the office), so that’s not helping. Anyway, here’s 26 brief reviews […]
