I’ve owned this book in hardcover since it was first published in 2006. Every once in a while over the last twelve years or so, I’ve looked at it and thought, oh I should read that, and then proceeded to not do that. This was in my college years, when I bought books a) Just because they were pretty, b) When I couldn’t afford them, and c) Indiscriminately, without doing any research about them. I had not read any Stephen King yet, at all, either, so yeah, let’s buy this […]
A man grows what he can, and tends it.
I’ve always read King with a bit of detached bemusement. I love his writing for the languid ease with which he captures the chronic normalcy of everyday life in a small town. When people tell me they don’t read King because he’s too scary, I’m always a little surprised that that’s the takeaway people have. I’ve never been scared by his books. But his characters….. His characterization is amazing, and the world he populates with those characters leaves me in awe. To that point, I […]
How can you give us the gift of a crazy character named Rando Thoughtful and then just as suddenly take that gift away? We need to talk, Uncle Stevie.
Dear Uncle Stevie, Having just finished the entire Dark Tower saga for the third time, I have a few things I’d like to discuss with you. I know you say you’re done writing these books, but I’d like for you to reconsider. Here are some suggestions for further entries into the Dark Tower series: **A novella about Rando Thoughtful, and his journey from managing a mall in upstate New York to guarding the castle of the Crimson King. And how he went from being called […]
Cats were the gangsters of the animal world, living outside the law and often dying there. There were a great many of them who never grew old by the fire
Somehow I never read this one as a kid. I think I recall my brother reading it and being super scared by it. Which is strange, because it IS terrifying, but I don’t think kids would be particularly vulnerable to it, as opposed to like It or The Stand. And then as an adult, I avoided it because I figured it would be outdated or cheesy (blaming the outdated and cheesy movie for that), but since they are thinking about remaking the movie, I figured why not. Oh! […]
I wish I had a sköldpadda of my very own.
For a long time I’ve stood by my assertion that Song of Susannah was my least favorite Dark Tower book, hands down. The last time I reviewed it (back in 2012), I even went out on a limb and said this: Song of Susannah, however, was my least favorite Dark Tower book when I first read it. And I can safely say that it will always be my least favorite. Well, I guess I can’t trust myself. Now that I’m almost another full loop through […]
“A short story is a different thing altogether – a short story is like a quick kiss in the dark from a stranger.”
I think it would be fair to say that Uncle Stevie and I have an understanding. He writes, I’m a constant reader, and that’s that. And I’ve been known to reread some of the things that he’s written many times. Even when the stories are upsetting or dark or scary, there’s something comforting about them for me. Maybe because I started reading them at a really early age (seriously, way too early….what exactly was going on in the 1980s?), his writing is sort of a […]
