Where It All Began

Carrie by Stephen King

June 15, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

There’s not a lot to say about reading Carrie because everyone already knows the story. I did and I hadn’t even the seen either of the movie adaptations. Carrie is bullied at school because she her strict religious upbringing has left her a near-total outcast from normal teenage society. When she gets her long-delayed first period during a post-gym class shower, she freaks out because she thinks that she’s bleeding to death. The other girls think this is hilarious and mock Carrie by throwing sanitary […]

Stranger King

Revival by Stephen King

June 9, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

A six-year-old boy playing with his toy soldiers in the front yard is interrupted by a visitor, the new minister at the family church. The Rev. Charles Jacobs is bright and energetic, with his pretty wife and young son completing a picture-perfect family. The six-year-old, Jamie Morton, will become enthralled by Jacobs and his twin passions, for God and electricity. Conducting youth service in the church basement, Rev. Jacobs spices up his scripture lessons with his various electrical toys and experiments, including a toy Jesus […]

Reminded Me of Under the Dome…Not a Good Reference Point

Sleeping Beauties by Owen King

May 31, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

I don’t know what to say here besides this new Stephen/Owen King mash-up was disappointing. I read “Under the Dome” eons ago and I really wish that my Amazon review had been pushed to Goodreads. I recall that I was flabbergasted that no one had reigned in King since that book was 1,074 freaking pages. I read that over two days back in 2009 when I was traveling to Afghanistan for work and recall that at one point I was awake for two days just […]

Great for Constant Readers…3 Stars for Others

Lisey's Story by Stephen King

May 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

When I read this book years ago I remember loving it and even crying while reading. Now I see the flaws in this book all over the place. It doesn’t help that at the time I had not read most of King’s works so I didn’t see how he heavily “borrowed” from his other stories. If you are a Castle Rock fan this book is full of Easter eggs for you. Heck, if you are a King fan you can seriously see parts of this […]

Desperation by Stephen King

May 24, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Stephen King. Stephen King. Ok. So this is an audiobook edition of the novel from 1996 read by the author. All in all aside from professional actors reading memoirs, some poets, and a few rare birds, authors tend to be terrible reading their work. Stephen King is perfectly adequate. Though this is a long one to stay with him. I wonder as he’s reading this one, one that is a) not that good and b) full of a lot of casual sexual references and sexual […]

The Dead Zone by Stephen King

April 29, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Somehow I hadn’t read this one before, and like last year when I read Firestarter, and others in more recent years reading the first handful of Stephen King novels, I am reminded how sharp he was for the first dozen years or so, with only the middling period in the mid to late 90s, before coming back from his injuries to begin anew. This one does something that he does from time to time…invent a supernatural plane or set of abilities etc in order to […]
