A most dangerous game

Under The Dome by Stephen King

June 15, 2025 by Caesar's Wife 3 Comments

The thing about chess is, all the action happens on the board. There’s nowhere to hide. No extra $100 bill of Monopoly money stashed under the table. Every piece is in plain sight, every move accounted for. You might not always understand the consequences in the moment—but the game is visible. Transparent. Brutal. That same dynamic sits at the heart of Under the Dome. Then the dome falls, and the game begins. In Chester’s Mill, the players are already in place. Big Jim Rennie—second selectman, […]

Never Flinch by Stephen King

Never Flinch by Stephen King

June 11, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

I honestly didn’t know what to do with this one. I was wavering between 2 and 3 stars, but ended up giving this 3 stars. Parts of the story were good, but I think overall this was just a mess. I don’t know what is going on with King and Holly Gibney, but I really wish that he would get back to something else with this series. This one really just had too much. Too many villains, too much Mary Sue-ness with regards to Barbara, […]

All Cops Are… Bad at Telling a Story

From a Buick 8 by Stephen King

June 9, 2025 by jeverett15 2 Comments

Ned Wilcox is struggling to deal with the death of his father, a state trooper killed by a drunk driver, when he starts showing up to his father’s old barracks to hang around and do odd jobs while hearing stories about his dad from the other troopers. Eventually, and more than a little reluctantly, they get around to telling the big story, the one about the car shut up out back in Shed B. The “car” resembles an old Buick Roadmaster, but nothing about it […]

Misery by Stephen King

Misery by Stephen King

May 31, 2025 by Classic 2 Comments

Well, I had a book challenge to read a book that has been on my TBR pile for 5 years. This one has been on my list for decades. I don’t know why I never wanted to read “Misery.” Maybe because I liked the movie so much and I had an inkling I wouldn’t like the book? I don’t know. This was a drag from beginning to end. At one point I kept looking to see if Stephen King even wrote this book. My main […]

Better than the Last Book

Dark Tower III: The Wastelands by Stephen King

May 7, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

I had a hard time with Stephen King’s Dark Tower II book, The Drawing of the Three. His depiction of one of the Black characters really bothered me. The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands continued to have a little of the same problem, when the reintegrated character’s “dark side” occasionally emerges, speaking like a character out of Gone with the Wind. But that was kept to a minimum, so that alone made me like this book better. The Waste Lands is a continuation of […]

I Could Kill Stephen King

The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King

April 19, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

I spent all day reading the second book of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series The Drawing of the Three and I am so furious I could spit nails. The second book picks up hours from when the last one ended. Roland, the Gunslinger, has reached the sea, having sacrificed his young companion and confronted the man in black. Before he knows what’s happening, he is attacked by a lobster-like sea monster whose eyes perch on stalks. He is badly injured, which leads to a growing […]
