If I Had a Rock Hammer

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King

January 27, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

When I reviewed The Queen’s Gambit I talked about how difficult it can be to read the source material after seeing the adaptation. You can’t help but notice what details were altered or left out entirely and as you’re doing so you evaluate those decisions just as much as you react to the text itself. Well, as you can imagine, that was very much still a problem for me while reading this novella. I’ve seen The Shawshank Redemption a number of times, especially in the […]

Wizard and Glass – Stephen King (1997)

Wizard and Glass by Stephen King

January 25, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Another reread from Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series. I think this is the best of the whole series (which means it’s a bit of a shame getting to it, knowing it marks the height as far as I am concerned. It will be interested if the pull I felt to complete the narrative initially is still here, now I’ve gotten this far). More than anything, this book delivers on the promise of the Gunslinger in a way that none of the others do. That […]

A Trip Down the Green Mile

The Green Mile by Stephen King

January 22, 2021 by RachelGraceSanchez 1 Comment

What a depressing book. From start-to-finish, I couldn’t wait to be done. Every turn of the page seemed to bring on a new horror. From squashed mice and executions gone terribly wrong, to evil-hearted characters and an unsatisfactory ending, there was plenty to be upset about. That said, Stephen King’s The Green Mile was no disappointment. Here’s a quick summary, so you know what I’m talking about: Paul Edgecome, a death row correctional officer, is responsible for carrying out the death penalty for those assigned […]

Cell – Stephen King (2006)

Cell by Stephen King

January 5, 2021 by vel veeter 1 Comment

I first read this when it came out in 2006, and I thought then, and maintain now, that the conceit, as presented in the title of the book and the promotional material for the book is dumb as hell, but the book itself, is smarter. “Your number is up!” the book cover screams! But the book itself, where, one afternoon some kind of “pulse” goes through cell phones causing each user who happens to be on a call at the moment, and anyone making a […]

It was her third time with live ammunition…and her first time on the draw from the holster Roland had rigged for her.

The Waste Lands by Stephen King

December 31, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This is my second read through the series, having read The Drawing of the Three and The Gunslinger a few more times. The first time I read this book was about 8 or so years ago while being a nanny for my newly adopted nephew. He cried a lot and I would sometimes sing to him, or I would sit with him and rock him while playing the audiobook of this aloud for us both to hear. He was an infant, so it was ok. […]

The Long and Winding Road

The Stand by Stephen King

December 29, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Was it crazy or brilliant to read a book about a superflu in 2020? On the one hand, *vague gesture to the world outside my apartment*, but on the other, it was a healthy reminder that things could be worse. Captain Trips, the colloquial name given to King’s lab-created bug, kills nearly all of humanity and most of the dogs after it escapes from an Army facility. Ah, but nearly is the keyword. Though King takes his time walking through the spread of Captain Trips […]
