Once, twice, and then I gave up

Dune by Frank Herbert

Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks

The Gunslinger by Stephen King

The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross

January 29, 2022 by carmelpie 3 Comments

I’ve watched the newest version of Dune a couple of times now and, so far, I’m enjoying it. I contemplated going back and finishing the book but, considering it has been years since I started reading it, it would make the most sense to start again from the beginning. If you have to talk yourself into reading something just to convince yourself “but this time, it will be worth it,” then maybe this book isn’t for you. Along with Dune, I’ve listed a few other […]

'Salem's Lot by Stephen King

I’ve read Stephen King since I was a kid. I have vivid memories of reading It one summer with my head propped up on the top bunk of my bed, reading to the bathroom light, absolutely terrified. I like a lot of his early stuff (except Christine. The only scary car I know of is a Yugo). ‘Salem’s Lot is King’s second published book and it’s a good one. Not terribly scary for me for the most part, but some very satisfying gore. ‘Salem’s Lot […]

If It Bleeds? King sure does; the master is no longer impervious

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

January 17, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Late last year, I thought to myself it’d been a while since I last read something by the author who once was my favorite: Stephen King. Since he’d just released a new novel, Billy Summers, one I’d seen some rather positive press for, I picked it up from Walmart, although with some trepidation. It had been some time since King had written anything that captured my attention the way my favorites of his have; I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve attempted to make […]

When Bobbi Anderson stumbles over a metallic object in the woods behind her house, she inadvertently starts a disastrous chain of events. As she begins digging up the object with the help of her friend, the drunken poet Jim Gardener, it begins to take a curious hold over the two of them and everyone else in the small town of Haven, Maine. Soon the residents find themselves in possession of strange new abilities, such as the capacity to read each other’s minds. After a period […]

What the Smuck?

Lisey's Story by Stephen King

'Salem's Lot by Stephen King

December 2, 2021 by scootsa1000 3 Comments

While I have been COVID telecommuting, I have tried to get out in the early afternoon for a nice 45 minute walk. I’ve been listening to a bit of Stephen King while I walk — I’ve already read all of his books, so listening (even to the scary stuff) is somewhat easy and comforting. If I lose my train of thought, no big deal. The story just goes on. This year, I listened to two books I had previously read, Lisey’s Story and ‘Salem’s Lot. […]

Just….No.

Later by Stephen King

November 27, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

I love Stephen King. I have loved his books practically my whole life. The Stand and It still hold up, as well as some of his other books and short stories. But his book Later is no classic. I would call it terrible, but it’s more inert than that. Later follows narrator Jamie Conklin from childhood to his early 20s. Jamie can see and talk to the dead (just like The Sixth Sense, which is mentioned). The dead must always tell him the truth, and […]
