They Would Walk 500 Miles

The Long Walk by Stephen King

June 20, 2022 by jeverett15 1 Comment

The premise for The Long Walk, a book written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pseudonym, would not be out of place on the Young Adult shelf at your local bookstore. In an vaguely dystopian America, one hundred teenage boys have entered a macabre competition. One morning they set off on a walk, and the last one still walking wins. They have to keep a constant pace of four miles per hour, no bathroom breaks, no sleep, no excuses at all. They get three […]

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 14/30 After sitting on it for over a month, I think I’m going to chalk this one up to being the wrong book at the wrong time for me. When I do my eventual Full Stephen King Re-Read™ I’m hoping I will enjoy it more. (This won’t be for ages. I’ve still got about half his back catalog to go the first time around.) I was telling myself the story of this book before writing this review, […]

A great book that isn’t really for me.

Pet Sematary by Stephen King

May 11, 2022 by narfna 12 Comments

I’m fighting with my brain on this one because this is the first time in a while that I can appreciate a Stephen King book and it’s craft and storytelling, but not *love* the results. This is the kind of book that made me think for years that I didn’t like horror. I do like horror, as it turns out, and it’s a much more diverse genre than I previously thought. But this is the kind of book I’m never going to love, even though […]

Wouldn’t it be funny if?

Skeleton Crew by Stephen King

April 29, 2022 by blauracke 2 Comments

I’ve owned this book for 20 years probably, and I think this was my third read through. It is a collection of short stories and some of King’ s earliest work, and the stories are of widely varying quality. Some made me roll my eyes, some left me indifferent, and some were gripping, but there is one I dislike immensely, and two that I kind of love. The one I dislike is the well-known and apparently popular “The Mist”, which takes up about 150 pages […]

The Colorado Kid by Stephen King

April 16, 2022 by Halbs Leave a Comment

The Colorado Kid is one of Stephen King’s three entries in the Hard Case Crime series. These Hard Case Crime books are throwbacks to 1950-ish pulpy novels, which at the time they initially came out cost the same as a movie ticket. They even come with the slightly unseemly painted covers of yore. (The HCC books, like the books they’re based on, are roughly the same cost as a movie ticket, which kind of stinks because movies are expensive!!) Colorado Kid sounds like it would […]

The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King

April 7, 2022 by jeverett15 1 Comment

The kingdom of Delain is ruled by a mediocre king getting up there in years. He has two sons: Peter, who is virtuous and clever, and Thomas, who is lazy and resentful. Fortunately for the kingdom, Peter is the elder son and set to assume the throne. Unfortunately for everyone, the king’s chief advisor and court magician, a mysterious, hooded figure named Flagg, has other ideas. Through his machinations and misdeeds, Flagg manages to poison the king and place the blame squarely on Peter’s shoulders. […]
