Firestarter

Firestarter by Stephen King

September 26, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Weird, I don’t remember this book being so long when I read it as a kid. But this one is fairly long. I was happy to read about Charlie and her father trying to get away from the scientists who want to lock them up and study them. I always found this book to be a bit reminiscent of Dean Koontz in parts since King really doesn’t do the whole evil scientist thing much in his books. But this still works years later. I always […]

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King

September 26, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

It’s weird. Every time I go home to visit (I am from PA) I end up reading a lot of Stephen King books. I read this one when it first came out, but realized I never posted a review of it. This weekend was dark and rainy and cloudy and it was a perfect setting to read about Trisha and her adventures lost in the woods on the Appalachian Trail. I always wonder what happened next with Trisha and her family. I can guess, but […]

Not That Prince Charles

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

September 25, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Let’s start with disclaimers, so you know where I’m coming from. The first is that I’m a big Stephen King fan, though a bit of a latecomer, and I am determined to read his entire output. The second is that fantasy novel are anathema to me. I just can’t. With the fake place names and the character names that are sorta like real people names but just a little off, and the whole “quest” structure where the hero runs into one strange new figure after […]

Fairy Tale

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

September 22, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

When a prolific author in his mid-70s publishes a new novel in which a crotchety old man with an aging dog befriends a teenager, you might start wondering how he’s viewing getting older and thinking about legacy. In a lot of ways this book addresses that question with the two character Howard Bowditch and Charlie Reade (and of course the dog Radar).  The novel begins with the narration of Charlie Reade who tells us from a future post about this story from his life, and […]

Your Favorites Can Still Write Stinkers

Fairy Tale by Stephen King

September 14, 2022 by Jake 3 Comments

Read this as part of CBR14Bingo: heart. One of the characters has a heart attack, won’t say which one. Also, Stephen King is a writer who has my heart. I love his books but this one was bad. I don’t really know where to start with how much I did not enjoy this book. And I feel terrible for that because I love Stephen King and appreciate what he is trying to do: rewrite beloved fantasy tales as a means of pandemic escapism. But ugh, this is […]

Probably one of my top ten favorite Kings?

The Dark Half by Stephen King

August 22, 2022 by narfna 1 Comment

Okay, now that I’ve slept on this a couple of days, I think my final thoughts are that this is a nearly perfect horror novel (hence the 4.5 stars, rounded up). I say nearly because there were a couple of moments that really didn’t age well. But most of it still holds up unbelievably well. The more SK books I’ve read, the more my (obvious) theory—that he is often at his best when he’s writing about writers—holds true. The Dark Half was notably written after Uncle […]
