It’s all Greek to me

Mythos by Stephen Fry

February 29, 2024 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Stephen Fry has penned and narrated a compelling retelling of the Greek myths of old. Starting with the creation of the world and going up until the troubled reign of King Midas, he deftly tells the various tales with wit and confidence. I am far from an ancient Greek scholar, but I knew the basics going in to Mythos. Titans, horny gods, Pandora’s box, stealing fire, Gordian knots… This is a deep well from which to draw stories. In the closing pages of this book, […]

Here is the first batch of “did not finish” for CBR 15. Troy by Stephen Fry The audio book was 11 hours. Listened to about half of it. Skipped quite a bit. Still didn’t finish it. I read Mythos and thought that the audiobook version of Troy would be easier to digest. It was not. Greek Myths by Robert Graves This is basically an encyclopedia of Greek myths. Maybe you can use this as some sort of reference material. But I could not get through […]

Great and unmerciful

Mythos: The Greek Myths Reimagined by Stephen Fry

February 28, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“He bought a couch that he adorned with silks of Tyrian purple. He lay her upon it and sang ballads to her. Like most great visual artists he was an incompetent musician and a deplorable poet.” ― Stephen Fry, Mythos: The Greek Myths Reimagined This is the third book I’ve read on Greek myths in the past four months. In terms of the retelling of the myths, this was the broadest and most comprehensive collection of stories thus far. The way the stories are told […]

I was today years old when I discovered this book and I are pretty much the same age

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

3.5 stars CBR13 Bingo: Machinery (space ships, the guide, Marvin – a lot of examples) Arthur Dent wakes up one morning to discover his house is about to be bulldozed. He’s very upset about it and goes to lie down in front of one of the bulldozers, so it can’t knock down his house, but is interrupted by his friend Ford Prefect, who has some very important things to tell him, and very little time left to do so. It turns out Ford Prefect is […]

A foundation for something more engaging

Troy by Stephen Fry

July 6, 2021 by Merryn 4 Comments

Bingo: Mythic The story of the fall of Troy is baked into Western culture. As I read this book I was reminded of so many other cultural artefacts built on the same foundation. In my head I could hear Sinead O’Connor wailing “there is no other Troy for you to burn”.  I remembered reading The Gate to Women’s Country by Sheri Tepper in my teens, where the women of this future dystopia ritually perform Iphigenia at Ilium each year, a reminder of the price that men’s […]

Troy Story

Troy: The Siege of Troy Retold by Stephen Fry

January 9, 2021 by TheShitWizard 6 Comments

We’re just one week in to 2021 and I’m already failing at my resolution to write reviews as soon as I finish a book. I blame Antifa. Anyhoo, tearing myself away from The Stupidest Coup, Troy was the perfect book to start my year with and Stephen Fry the perfect host. I’d already devoured Mythos which dealt with the birth of the gods, and Heroes which dealt with the age of Heracles, Theseus and co, so it was a safe bet that I’d love this […]
