Happy April and Happy Poetry Month

All of Those Babies by Mylisa Larsen

Aunt Sue's Stories by Langston Hughes

Bless Our Pets : Poems of Gratitude for Our Animal Friends by Lee Bennett Hopkins

April 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Happy April and Happy Poetry Month. I am sure I will find other poetry books for kids, but I will start with three that I just found. All are available (or with the last one “soon” in April 2024) but all have been read via online reader copies. The first is All of Those Babies by Mylisa Larsen and illustrated by Stephanie Laberis . This book is one solid poem that rhymes and has repetition. The idea is how all babies, be they lizard, human […]

Cinderelliot: A Scrumptious Fairytale by Mark Ceilley and Rachel Smoka-Richardson

Dolls and Trucks Are for Everyone by Robb Pearlman (

These titles, Kind Like Marsha: Learning from LGBTQ+ Leaders by Sarah Prager (and illustrated by Cheryl Thuesday), Cinderelliot: A Scrumptious Fairytale by Mark Ceilley and Rachel Smoka-Richardson (illustrated by Stephanie Laberis) and Dolls and Trucks Are for Everyone by Robb Pearlman (illustrated by Eda Kaban) are the perfect trio. Each one different, but each dealing with the themes of GLBTQ+ movers and shakers, being yourself and the “should” and “should nots” when it comes to toys, games, playing and more. They are clever, but not […]

Two books, two ways of telling the same story

Ocean! Waves for All by Stacy McAnulty

The Sea Knows by Alice B. McGinty

July 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr12bingo How-To How does a person who likes children’s books find a “how-to book” that is not dull or confusing? I have found several “how to” books or even science or craft kits, and thought, “I’m college educated, and I have no idea what is going on here, how is a kid supposed to figure it out?” But I put my thinking cap on and while waiting for those few minutes at the end of the day to go by (that 10 minutes you can’t […]

Two different stories that tie into each other

December 27, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Fur, Feather, Fin All of Us Are Kin and Mapping Sam are two science books that are not dull science. While Fur is more traditional science, it is written so it reads as a story. And Sam is a story that has information in it. Mapping Sam was my favorite out of the two. Joyce Hesselberth creates a story of a cat that puts their family to bed then goes out into the night on their nightly adventures. They explore all sorts of areas, climb […]
