Paco’s Story; Freud; I Hold a Wolf by the Ears

Paco's Story by Larry Heineman

Freud by Stefan Zweig

I Hold a Wolf by the Ears by Laura van den Berg

January 31, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Paco’s Story This short novel was published in 1987 and won the National Book Award. Larry Heineman tells us in this 2002 introduction to the book is that he wanted to tell a story that is as much about story telling as the story itself. This happens a lot in war novels, and especially in Vietnam novels and books like Tim O’Brien’s If I Die in a Combat Zone Box Me Up and Ship me Home and The Things they Carried. I think part of […]

the world of yesterday

We’re all so f*cked

The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig

October 27, 2021 by Singsonggirl 2 Comments

It took me ages to finish this book. Not because I had troubles reading it, the language in this is in fact incredibly fluid, I would even say that German prose hardly gets better than this. Escapade by Evelyn Scott

Chess Story by Stefan Zweig

A Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler

Sun and Steel by Yukio Mishima

Escapade – 4 Stars Evelyn Scott is a little lost to the ages, but might be making a comeback in awareness/popularity. She a very well known novel called The Wave, which takes place during the Civil War (I haven’t read it, but I am hoping it’s much better than that other very well known Civil War novel at the same time), and a few memoir books. This book was written when she was about 30, and several years after the events in it happened. When […]

The Longest Journey

Magellan by Stefan Zweig

October 24, 2019 by blauracke Leave a Comment

In September of 1519, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan set out to find and sail a presumed passage between the Atlantic and the South Pacific in order to find a Western route to the highly coveted Spice Islands. Although not planned as such, this journey ended up the first circumnavigation of the world which proved that the Earth is a round, rotating ball. Magellan himself did not live to see its conclusion as he died during an unnecessary battle in the Philippines, but the important events […]
