Once upon a time, David McLain wrote a book. It was good, you should read it. Then he wrote another one, this one much longer. And this one was also good! This means that instead of his first book being a lucky stab in the dark, David McLain is a Good Author. They aren’t easy to find, nowadays. (Disclaimer: David McLain wrote another book before these two. I have not read it, and therefore have no opinion of it.) Alice Anderson has many titles. World’s […]
Retribution Falls: unlikable characters, very likable banter
A friend recommended this book to me, with the promise that it was hilarious, that his girlfriend kept reading lines aloud. He wasn’t wrong, and I found myself doing the same thing to my boyfriend. This is a light, fairly fast-paced read, and highly entertaining. The slight problem that I had with it was that the characters are, for the most part, extremely unlikable and unsympathetic. Now, I like morally difficult characters (cf. everyone in Game of Thrones except Jon Snow and Daenerys Stormborn). But […]
She Alone Will Wield the Strength and Skill….
This was April’s Vaginal Fantasy pick and I’m going to come right out and admit that I did not finish it. I probably would have finished it, it was annoying but brainless, except that while reading the VF discussion boards I learned that it ends on a cliffhanger and I have no desire to plod though eye-roll inducing trope usage only to find out that the author can’t even write a complete story. This is an ongoing complaint of mine, I have no problem with […]
Well, THAT was Totally Unexpected
“To call the scene a disaster does it a terrific disservice. The final death toll was never fully calculated, for heaven only knew how many bodies might lie wedged in the rubble. And alas, there was no time for excavation.” – Hale Quarter
Too much time messing around with the circus
This world and characters have soo much potential, but the story spends so much wasted time on Elizabeth either planning or thinking. I also find the title a bit misleading as it does not really seem to appear to refer to Elizabeth but to a minor character who only has a few pages worth of story. Elizabeth Barnabus was born into a circus family, but the evil Duke of Northampton ruined the family in order to force then 15 year old Elizabeth into indentured servitude […]
“I shield in the name of fashion. I accessorize for one and all. Pursuit of truth is my passion. This I vow by the great parasol.”
I am very late to the Parasol Protectorate party, which Gail Carriger threw from approximately 2009-2012, and celebrated the publication of a 5-book steampunk/urban fantasy series. Now that I have finally read the series, it’s evident that the fanfare is deserved. Carriger has a voice that is unique of her contemporaries, and while I consider all of my very favorite historical romance/fantasy books to have some measure of wit and humor, these books are on another level. If Wodehouse decided to dabble in the territory […]
