“I’m afraid that if I stop writing I’ll stop thinking and start feeling.”

February 8, 2017 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

It is hard to know how to review this book. I had planned to read this before Ms. Fisher passed away, but following her death it seemed somehow imperative to read it as soon as I could muster my strength to do so. It was time to say goodbye to Carrie, and to the character that defined her career. However, the very structure of this book limits its possible impact; it exists at all because Fisher discovered the journals she kept during the filming of […]

If you loved the movie, you need to read this.

January 26, 2017 by narfna 3 Comments

If you’ve read any reviews of this book, what I’m about to say is probably something you’ve heard before: This is one of the best film novelizations I’ve ever read, if not the best. Oy, that sounds really hyperbolic, and to be fair, it’s really not a high bar to clear. People aren’t going around screaming for the next great novelization. They just aren’t. Also, the novelization for The Force Awakens was quite terrible, so psychologically speaking, pretty much if this one had been halfway decent I […]

We Are Alderaan

January 17, 2017 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Beginning with the award ceremony on Yavin 4, Princess Leia tells the story of Leia’s mission to save what remained of Alderaan, the people who had settled on other worlds. Leia and fellow Alderaanian Rebel, Evaan, set out to reunite the diaspora as the Empire threatens to wipe out all surviving Alderaanians. It wasn’t a bad story, but it had weaknesses not found in Darth Vader or Chewbacca. It didn’t really make sense to me that Leia would try to gather the survivors in one spot. It seems […]

Princess Leia takes center stage in the excellent Star Wars: Bloodline

January 13, 2017 by TylerDFC 4 Comments

This new iteration of Star Wars since Disney purchased them a few years back is not the Star Wars that we grew up on. While The Force Awakens largely played it safe there were a few key differences that have set the continuation of the story apart. First, most of the characters exist in a moral gray area now. The days of the EVEEL Emperor and sneering Imperial toadies is largely behind us.  Secondly, these stories are primarily female driven. So far both of the […]

After the Death Star exploded

January 4, 2017 by Emmalita 10 Comments

I loved Star Wars as a kid, but never got into the extended universe. I’m sure there was a reason, but I don’t know what it was. With the resurgence of Star Wars, I am now giving myself permission to enjoy non movie Star Wars stories. I wasn’t sure how interested I would be in Darth Vader on his own, but I was pleasantly surprised. Is he not fabulous? He is working that cape. At the end of Star Wars, all Darth Vader knew was […]

Goodnight, Sweet Princess …

January 3, 2017 by xoxoxoe 5 Comments

I happened to be at the Disney park that has franchised most of the Star Wars experience last week when I heard about Carrie Fisher’s passing. Talk about bittersweet, as we saw posters of Princess Leia, from all of her franchise appearances, around the park. I first saw Star Wars on its first release in 1977, and loved her spunky take on the princess, although I have to admit my young teen eyes and heart were mostly focused on the dreamy Luke Skywalker. But I have enjoyed Carrie Fisher […]
