So, this book basically came out of nowhere, right? I only heard about it a couple of months ago thanks to some Goodreads friends, all of whom were also completely surprised by how good this book was. (Granted, I think a lot of them don’t regularly read YA and might be unaware of some of the wonderful authors currently working in the genre.) But still. Even with all of those reviews, the book still managed to surprise me. Because what’s so surprising about it isn’t that […]
It was good! (mostly) Yay!
I was nervous about reading this book for a couple of reasons: Firstly, because there was a whole hullabaloo around it involving bigots upset at the reasonable portrayal of a diverse galaxy, and five year olds in the bodies of grown men (mostly) crying about the old Extended Universe being axed, and so they must automatically shun the new canon, as if the people writing those new books didn’t love the old books as much as they did and wouldn’t do their best to preserve as […]
Jahan Cross is Back!
My review of Volume One of Agent of the Empire is available here. Imperial Agent Jahan Cross is back in Dark Horse’s Hard Targets . Volume one focused largely on the suave, brash, and tortured Cross. It was a fun, if slightly melancholy, spybro story. Volume two is all about Cross the intel man. In this arc, powerful families of Serreno are clawing for power amongst one another and to determine Serreno’s place in the Empire. Cross is sent in to help sort things out. […]
The Saga Continues
The kid and I took a little break from the Star Wars books for a bit, but we’re back now. At least we’re into the good movies portion of the series. Like all the other books, this one takes most of the dialogue from the movie verbatim, and also fills in some of the subtext gaps. Interestingly, this particular book adds subtext that is clearly trying to retcon episodes 1 through 3. It was a valiant effort, and my son didn’t notice (he doesn’t know […]
Cross. Jahan Cross.
You know a song is great when it can be covered in any style. Think of how many people have covered Dylan and The Beatles. You also know that a fictional universe is great when you can tell any kind of story within it. While I am not a huge fan of the Star Wars movies, I do appreciate the universe. It is so well known that it can be a backdrop for any story in any medium. Star Wars: Edge of the Empire is […]
The Expanded Universe is dead! Long live the Expanded Universe!
After Disney bought Lucasfilm and secured the rights to Star Wars they announced that new movies would be coming shortly. As I write this The Force Awakens is less than two months from release and based on a spectacular trailer the fandom hasn’t been this excited since The Phantom Menace was announced back in the late 90’s. At the same time Disney also revealed that the vast catalog of games, books, and comics that detailed the events after Return of the Jedi would no longer […]
