They boldly went where no one had gone before

Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 by Paula M. Block, Terry J. Erdmann,

February 10, 2021 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

My first memory of Star Trek is watching it on the little TV my grandparents had sitting on the corner of their kitchen table, complete with rabbit ears and the 4 stations that would come in. We didn’t watch it constantly but when our family was visiting in the evenings after dinner it would be on while we were playing cards. We would stir up a cup of International Cafe which I THOUGHT was cocoa mix but after a reddit nostalgia dive realized was instant […]

To Boldly Read Where No One has Read Before

I Am Captain Kirk (Star Trek) by Frank Berrios

I Am Mr. Spock (Star Trek) by Elizabeth Schaefer

Too Many Tribbles! (Star Trek) by Frank Berrios

December 3, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like some science fiction. I also am a book nerd. Most especially children’s books. I also like Golden Books. Those skinny, tiny picture books with that shiny golden spine (ooh how I love shiny). And the memories of when I was allowed them (usually when mom went to the grocery store). Therefore, when I was looking up a book for a customer, I stumbled upon three GB books that checked the boxes: Science Fiction (Star Trek), Book (Golden Book) and children’s. I found I […]

Cover of Star Trek graphic novel showing Jean Luc Picard

Picard: Counting down to the series

Picard: Countdown by Kirsten Beyer & Mike Johnson

October 8, 2020 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

This was a 3 part comic series published as a graphic novel covering the events that lead up to the latest Star Trek Series Picard. Generally speaking I’d recommend reading this first if you haven’t seen Picard and want to as it’ll provide some detail and context that takes more effort with the show. It covers events that lead up to the Kelvinverse Star Trek movies as well as it focuses on the risk of Romulus’s sun going nova and Picard is leading the mission […]

“What I mean to say is, the more you remember, the more you’ve lost.”

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

March 15, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

I thought I remembered much more of Station Eleven than I did; I had remembered it as a story of Kirsten and the Traveling Symphony and several scrapes with some religious extremists. I remembered Jeevan in the fortress of his brother’s tower. I remembered skulking through rotting schools and all-encompassing trees. What strikes me now is how immediately the sense of dread starts to kick in; there is no slow build; a statement about everything falling to pieces kicks in within the first chapter. Maybe […]

Insurance cover for field trips must be hard to get…

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy by Mike Johnson & Ryan Parrott

January 6, 2020 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

This year I started with a graphic novel that I missed when it came out in 2016. Which is actually weird because I love Star Trek, am a fan of the Kelvinverse, and have read all of the other IDW comics featuring the nu-Kirk and crew. This particular novel lightly touches on the time Kirk et. al were at Starfleet Academy. The primary focus being Uhura investigating an unexplained radio signal from deep space and asking Kirk to help out as it involved hacking classified […]

Evolution is a fickle bitch

I'm Just a Person by Tig Notaro

April 25, 2019 by Claire Badger Leave a Comment

I  set out to learn about Tig Notaro when she appeared on Star Trek: Discovery as the dry, hyper-confident engineer Jet Reno. I love this character so much that I went down the Tig Notaro rabbit hole and discovered she does not disappoint, and is possibly the only person worthy of depicting Jet Reno. I chose to do the audiobook version of her memoir, in part because I love her dry-Daria like delivery and wish I could truly perfect my like-I-give-a-fuck-about-emoting-monotone like she has. If […]
