Of Birds and Trees

The Warbler by Sarah Beth Durst

April 22, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This one feels a bit more similar to Sarah Beth Durst’s novel, The Lost, than some of her other more recently published ones – even if The Lost is my most recently read of her. Something about the main character in this one felt very reminiscent of that earlier novel, and both novels were centered within a version of our world rather than within a fantasy world setting (like Race the Sand or The Spellshop). Regardless of the setting, mother-daughter relationships always play a prominent […]

In the Shadow of the Throne

In the Shadow of the Throne by Kate Sheridan (writer), Gaia Cardinali (artist), Miach Myers (Letterer)

January 19, 2025 by dreadpiratekel 1 Comment

Jordan is a 17-year-old who is on vacation with his parents and two younger siblings.  He has a lot of feelings about being the de facto babysitter for the younger siblings and having to shepherd them around the art museum his family is currently visiting.  He’s been banned from using his phone isn’t able to go to a bookstore or comic book store, and is having zero fun.  He begs for some time off to go to the bathroom, and on the way he stumbles […]

Art Is Power

Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

January 10, 2023 by Owlizabeth 5 Comments

I’m not sure I can discuss this book coherently. I’ve started and stopped and rewritten this review so many times I’m starting to feel dizzy. How do I convey the perfect writing, the depth of emotion, the complex characters, the history and meaning and joy and sorrow Grace D. Li has managed? In a freaking heist novel??!? The audacity! Let’s start with the basic plot: steal back the five bronze zodiac animal heads that were looted after the burning of Beijing’s Old Summer Palace and are […]

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

December 23, 2019 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

The Bride Test is the second romance from Helen Hoang. I had to figure out what all the buzz was about for myself and was not disappointed. I absolutely love the illustrated cover. Definitely don’t want this trend to go away. I haven’t gotten around to her previous book, The Kiss Quotient, but thankfully, this series can be read as stand-alone books. The characters simply inhabit the same universe. After a tragic loss, Khai Diep believes he can’t feel emotion because his grief didn’t follow […]
