An adventure spy novel more than a murder mystery – also Cannonball!

May 2, 2015 by Malin 12 Comments

In this book, we meet the adventurous Victoria Jones, a young woman with a knack for lying frequently and convincingly, who shortly after being fired from her most recent position as a mediocre shorthand typist, meets a handsome and charming young man in the park. They strike up a conversation, he confides that he is about to go to Baghdad and asks to take a couple of photographs of her as a memento. Victoria is smitten, and as the young man she’s fallen head over […]

The safe cracker and the nerdy secret agent

April 28, 2015 by Malin 6 Comments

Five years ago, Angel Ramirez gave up safe-cracking and stealing and swore to mend her ways, sick of hurting and using people. She’s been working hard to stay on the straight and narrow, making a living as an interior decorator, trying to earn the forgiveness of her disappointed family members. When the woman Angel considers as close as a real aunt is kidnapped, and the ransom demanded is the hoard of diamonds belonging to notorious gangster Walter Borgola, Angel has no choice but to reunite […]

A historical romance with double agents

January 19, 2015 by Malin 8 Comments

I’m back! Did you miss me? I finally finished enough work to start catching up on my reviews. Brace yourselves for quite a few in the coming week. This is the fifth book in Joanna Bourne’s Spymasters series, but as the books are written out of chronological order historically speaking, and some overlap (for those who HAVE read the previous books in the series, there’s a really interesting blog post here explaining where the various books fit into the historical time line), it’s not actually that big […]

Finally a Philippa Gregory book I actually enjoyed

December 27, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

They travel through Europe to England, calling themselves “Green” and making a new life for themselves as loyal Christians. Hannah´s father has a printing press and soon his skilled work comes to the attention of scholars like John Dee. While John Dee is visiting their print shop with his patron, Lord Robert Dudley, Hannah has one of her visions, seeing an angel over their shoulder. […]

Spies in Love

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

A Spy to Die For is the second book in the Assassins Guild series. Instead of a sequel, Kris DeLake cleverly decides to push two minor characters from the first book to the forefront in the same timeline. It’s more a take two on the events of the first book,  Assassins in Love. The set up is the same, two strangers working for rival organizations are thrust together by chance. Jack Hunter works for the Rovers, a group of rogue mercenaries who refuse to join the Guild. Skye […]

Another Historical Romance, But with Cannonball

July 11, 2014 by Mrs. Julien 12 Comments

Lauren Willig’s Pink Carnation floral espionage series continues with book four of eleven, The Seduction of the Crimson Rose, and features droll characters bantering their way through espionage and falling in love. It’s a turn of the 19th century The Thin Man with all of the wit and irreverence one would expect of a Georgian Nick and Nora. As with the first novel, The Secret History Pink Carnation, the adventure is framed by a PhD candidate, Eloise, conducting research on aristocratic spies of the period and […]
