The Beauty and the Civil Service Clerk

December 3, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

Lady Phillipa Benning is a young, beautiful, fantastically wealthy widow and the undisputed queen (and Mean Girl) of London society. She has set her eyes on the Marquis of Broughton, who is equally eligible, wealthy and popular, but her arch rival from school, Lady Jane Cummings also seems to have him in her sights and the vexing man is not beyond playing the two ladies against each other. Things start getting complicated after Philippa, having arranged a tryst with Broughton in a library, ends up hidden […]

3.5 stars From Goodreads: Fisher Braun knows how to keep a secret. As a covert paramilitary operative, his job – and his life – depends on it. He’s at the top of his game, ready for action and always in control. No enemy has ever brought him to his knees, but one lover has: Zachary Allen, the man currently sharing his bed. The perfect package of brains and brawn, Zach is someone worth coming home to, and Fisher hates keeping him in the dark about […]

A Romping Fowl Time

May 20, 2017 by Ale Leave a Comment

Whew! Finally in the double digits for reviews! Last CBR I reviewed the first of the Artemis Fowl books, and I loved it so much I went hunting for the rest of the series. All of our favorite characters are back! Holly, Root, everyone’s favorite pre-teen mastermind, and excitingly, Mulch Diggums, who is my personal squee character. While this installment started out a little rocky, it finds its footing about a quarter of the way though and becomes the romping fun adventure we were all […]

A historical romance with a murder investigation and lots of angst

March 26, 2017 by Malin 3 Comments

Leila Beaumont is a beautiful and very talented portrait artist, as celebrated throughout Europe as her husband, Francis, is becoming reviled. While Leila is aware of Francis adultery, his tendency to drink and take drugs to excess, she is unaware that he also ran a brothel in Paris and tended to make money through the blackmail of prominent members of society. While she hasn’t allowed him in her bed for years, Leila is nonetheless grateful to Francis for rescuing her when she was orphaned in […]

2017 Ruins Everything.

February 5, 2017 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Slow Horses is not a bad book. If I’d read it a few years ago, I might’ve liked it enough to read the whole series. Alas, I read it in 2017 and my attempt to find some harmless escapist fiction was thwarted by a book that hit uncomfortably close to home. The “slow horses” referenced in the title are disgraced MI5 agents. Any agent who’s botched a mission is sent to Slough House to push papers around and monitor extremist websites. There are no ops […]

The gentleman in black turned down the corridor, and Charlotte Highwood followed

October 5, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

Miss Charlotte Highwood, youngest sister of Minerva and Diana, is not really interested in marriage. She just wants to tour Europe with her best friend Delia Parkhurst, but after earning the moniker “The Desperate Debutante” after her mother literally flung her into the path of an eligible young nobleman (causing him to fall off his horse and three carriages to collide), convincing the ton that she’s not a scheming fortune huntress is going to be more difficult. She knows full well that her extremely marriage-minded […]
