Zombie Anthology!!

Nights of the Living Dead by Jonathan Maberry and various

June 12, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is another one of those collaboration efforts by a bunch of well known (especially in the zombie genre) authors.  Like all of the anthologies I’ve read this year (is anthology the right word?), some were realllllly really good, and I actually wanted to hear more about the characters and world that the author created.  Some were fine and I just read through them and they left my brain forever.  I don’t really remember any of them being truly bad though. There was one […]

One flighty cat

Professor Astro Cat's Frontiers of Space (This Is a Reissue of a Previous Edition) by Dominic Walliman

June 9, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Professor Astro Cat’s Frontiers of Space (This Is a Reissue of a Previous Edition) has much in the way of scientific facts which are seriously presented but are paired with very cartoon illustrations.  The text in Dominic Walliman’s book is long, dense, and not for all readers. The serious tone of the wording would work for a more serious reader/learner, but the cartoon art might turn them off. Of course, the student might be drawn to the cartoons and that will keep their attention with […]

Magical History Tour #10: The First Steps on the Moon V10 by Fabrice Erre

May 27, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have been reading several science-based books of late. I am not sure why, but I have found several books I have enjoyed. And one that I knew I would like before I ever read (as I have not found a book in the series I have not liked) was Magical History Tour #10: The First Steps on the Moon V10 by Fabrice Erre and illustrated by Sylvain Savoia. This time we follow our narrators Annie and Nico as they learn about the historic First […]

I tried to make a plane joke, but it didn’t land

Flying Machines: Howe the Wright Brothers Soared. by Alison Wilgus

Science Comics: Rockets: Defying Gravity. by Anne Drozd and Jerzy Drozd

May 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Learn about how we fly without wings through the voice of the Wright brother’s sister in Flying Machines: Howe the Wright Brothers Soared. The history of flight is introduced with, first a story presentation of the facts, and second with pages of the technical presentation. The use of color and details to separate these two sections helps alert you to the change. Part history and part science story, we meet not only the Wright brothers in this graphic novel by Alison Wilgus, but we also […]

Don’t toss your baby brother around on the moon

Molly on the Moon by Mary Robinette Kowal

April 5, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When Molly moves to the Moon, she is going to live in such a small home that she can only bring one toy with her, her special soft toy lamb. But that does not stop our Molly on the Moon from having fun. She has some tin cans for having tea, an old cover for a cape and her imagination. However, one day that special toy goes missing only to be found in the clutches of Molly’s baby brother, Luke, (who since the gravity is […]

The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza by Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris

April 5, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Shawn Harris is a fun but bad kids jokes read. There are puns, fun, pizza, moon dust, and poetry writing/quoting worms to name a few things that this Instagram started story has. Barnett and Harris decided to take a cat (who has the great line of “meow”) through a story set on the moon. The cat is sent by some Earth scientists and generals (with interesting colloquialism) and is to stop the […]
