I was nervous about reading this book for a couple of reasons: Firstly, because there was a whole hullabaloo around it involving bigots upset at the reasonable portrayal of a diverse galaxy, and five year olds in the bodies of grown men (mostly) crying about the old Extended Universe being axed, and so they must automatically shun the new canon, as if the people writing those new books didn’t love the old books as much as they did and wouldn’t do their best to preserve as […]
When I added this review I typed it “Sharks of Honor” by accident, and now I am obsessed with that as a title for a book I will hopefully someday write.
What a strange little book, but I quite enjoyed it. Will definitely be reading the rest of the series. I wavered on my rating for quite a while. I liked this more than some books I’ve read that I rated four stars, but it had some pretty significant pacing and world-building issues that were really jarring, and I just couldn’t ignore them. I’m also hoping that future books will be even better, so I’m saving my higher ratings, I guess. I’ve been meaning to read […]
Satisfying series ender, but not as good as I remembered.
This definitely wasn’t as good as I remember it being, which is sad. But it was still good! It’s just, I remember swooning pretty hard during the scene where Luke and Mara Jade finally confess their love. I remember it being epic, and significant (both in terms of importance and length). And reading that scene again, it didn’t feel either of those things. I guess I was bringing the swoon myself last time, which makes sense. I was very practiced at doing that in the […]
A space opera that’s more concerned with the little people than the space or the opera.
Oh, man. This series. This book!!!! WHAT. Ancillary Mercy is probably my favorite of the series so far. The first book might overtake it on re-read, just because I’m a sucker for finely structured stories, and Breq’s revenge journey cum search for identity alternated with flashbacks to her time as Justice of Toren was very, very satisfying (you know, once you figured out what the hell was going on). The second book was Breq beginning to come into her own, win people over to her […]
not as good as i remembered sadface
This book is still much, much, much better than a lot of the Star Wars novels I’ve read, but it’s not as good as I remember it being. Granted, my standards weren’t suuuuuper high in 2004. I was young, and very, very distracted by the whole THING of being a freshman in college. Plus, all I realllllly cared about was Luke/Mara Jade and kissing and such, and that is definitely something that this series is focused on (although most of it occurs in the second […]
Epically epic epicness and more words that also mean epic.
Turns out I didn’t wait long enough to start this series. I have fast run out of Saga and that is a tragedy. When is the next book? Siiiiigh. (Reminder to self for next time starting a Brian K. Vaughan series: the “long enough” time to wait to start a series of his is “when it’s already finished”.) Slight spoilers to follow. More than any other book in this series so far, I feel like Volume 5 really hit home for me why this series […]
