Kind of ridiculous and kind of fun

When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare

December 11, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Tessa Dare is usually a safe author for me, so when I went looking for a fun romance to read on the airplane during a trip, I blindly grabbed one of hers that I hadn’t read. And I ended up with When a Scot Ties the Knot (2015). Now, because I’m behind in my reviews, I read this book a couple of months ago, and I’m having a little trouble remembering all the details. However, in my notes for this review I wrote: “It’s kind of ridiculous […]

Just because you’re adequately good at something doesn’t mean that’s what you should do.

Severance by Ling Ma

December 10, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I decided to read Severance (2018) by Ling Ma after seeing it on NPR’s Best Books of 2018 List because it looked interesting and was a little bit outside my wheelhouse. I’m up for a Dystopian novel every once in a while, but the ones I read are more like adventure stories. Severance is different. It’s a little slower and more melancholy. The book mirrors our own lives in order to make us wonder how far from the sick we really are. Candace Chen is a first-generation American living in New […]

It’s not about the dog

Good Boy by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy

December 8, 2019 by Sophia 1 Comment

Good Boy (2017) by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy is an example of a book where the title and cover have very little, if anything, to do with the actual story. There is mention of a dog and one puppy, but it is definitely not the center of the story. I’m a fan of Sarina Bowen, and I’ve mostly enjoyed her romance novels involving professional hockey players. Even though there were a couple plot points that had me shaking my head, this was another fun, entertaining, […]

My life was narrated for me by others

Educated by Tara Westover

December 7, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I had seen Educated (2018) by Tara Westover everywhere. It was on all kinds of reading lists, reviews were showing up left and right, and my friends were all reading it. I put it on hold at the library, and waited the months and months before it came available. Then, right before I was about to read it, the holds on my library card somehow reset and I was suddenly waiting six months again! Fortunately, one of my friends had a hardcover copy and loaned it to […]

The Lady Sherlock Series Book 3

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

December 7, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I’ve gotten myself hooked on yet another mystery series. The first book in the series is A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas. The series centers around Charlotte Holmes, a female version of Sherlock Holmes. Charlotte was able to get away from her horrible parents and make a life for herself solving crimes under the name of Sherlock Holmes. The Hollow of Fear (2018) is the third book in the series. Charlotte is a unique heroine. She is smart, insightful, deductive, and unemotional, which makes her perfect for […]

History and adventure all in one

Turn Right at Machu Picchu by Mark Adams

December 4, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I do enjoy going on trips, and I had a long backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon planned for October of this year. Unfortunately, I could not get a permit, so I was left with some vacation time and nothing to do. I decided to join a tour company I’d used before and go visit Peru and Machu Picchu. I’d never been to South America, and the trip included some hiking over a 15,000 foot pass, which sounded beautiful and interesting. Because I was going […]
