Capybara might have 4,383 friends, but I only had time for three reviews

Extra Ezra Makes and Extra-Special Friend. by Kara Lareau

Oona and the Shark (book two) by Kelly Dipucchio

Capybara Is Friends with Everyone by Maddie Frost

March 17, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I did not have high hopes for Extra Ezra Makes and Extra-Special Friend. It looked goofy and off-putting. But when I got into it, despite the um… less than “all there” looking students at Ezra’s school, the story did capture my interest and the illustrations worked for the humor needed. Kara Lareau has written a picture book about friendship, and what not to do. This idea is not new, but because Ezra is a special young person, the theme fits the sensibilities of today.  Ezra […]

Dragonboy is here to play

Dragonboy #01 by Fabio Napoleoni

Dragonboy and the Wonderful Night #02 by Fabio Napoleoni

March 17, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dragonboy #01 by Fabio Napoleoni and Dragonboy and the Wonderful Night (Dragonboy #02) also by Napoleoni found their way to by reading list. My first thought was, this looks a little like No, David! by David Shannon, only cuter. But it turned out to be nothing like that at all. Not only is it cuter, with a more realistic, but still cartoon like, atmosphere to the artwork it is nicer overall. The colors are not bold or hard, and yet, not overly soft, and muted. […]

Short story that needs a novel

Hush by Mary Anne Mohanraj

March 10, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dear Mary Anne Mohanraj, your story Hush just blew me away! I have probably never read anything so short that threw me for such a loop. This story about a middle-aged mom coming home from a long trip as a flight attendant. She is “human” but not of a new world, not like her ancestors of Old Earth. But is she humane? This is tested the day she comes home to find her (alien) neighbors’ daughter (approximately 14-years-old) being harassed by the local authorities. Of course, you […]

The Next Chapter

Run Book One by John Lewis

March 9, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Run Book One is an easier read than the March trilogy by the same team of John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell, and L. Fury. However, there are pages that are terribly crowded with text that covers the illustrations and can make it difficult to read at times. For me, the combination of the black and white illustrations and this crowded information makes everything blur together. Along with a physically dark format (the black colors can be solid), sometimes I lost the message being told. […]

Hold on….let me think

Hold That Thought by Bree Galbraith

March 2, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a young child starts finding the smallest form of an idea, it slowly grows until it is a giant bloom of creativity and wonder. Most of their family and friends support them, but there is that one bully that tells the child, “That is not how an idea is supposed to look.” And this, of course, starts doubt. Yet, they realize, since they and the others who added to the idea, and had their own, each looked different, and combining them made each even […]

My dad isn’t a vampire but my mom was (almost) a lumberjack

Lumberjackula by Mat Heagerty

February 23, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We know the story presented in Lumberjackula by Mat Heagerty: a child wants to please his parents by doing what they want him to do; however, he does not want to do exactly what either wants for him as neither choice is the right fit for him. He has a need, a need to DANCE! But when your mother is a lumberjack and your father a vampire, you must decide which side you are on. Or do you? Of course, there are lies (Jack tells […]
