Grandparents do the oddest things

Granddad’s Pink Trousers by Lucie Hasova Truhelkova

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Granddad’s Pink Trousers is not for everyone. Lucie Hasova Truhelkova made a story that, when you learn the “punch line” you feel bad about judging the grandfather during the rest of the book, but at the same time, I felt the grandfather was judging and the rest of us were really douches for not being like him. I mean, the story is about the man who is strange by most people’s standards. He is upset when his wife tosses out a yogurt that is a […]

My Elephant is Blue: A book about big, heavy feelings by Melinda Szymanik

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Elephant is Blue: A book about big, heavy feelings at first seems like it would be a little cliched. There will be a literally and the figurative elephant (sadness) and then something magical will happen. And while, yes, things do work out in the end, it takes time to get there. We watch as our narrator is trying to find a way to remove the heavy elephant sitting on their chest. Not even hungry for chocolate, we know tht this is not going to […]

The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

SPOILER included: The Degenerates is a slow story, that ends on a not happy note! I wanted my happy ending! I know it was not realistic to have one, but these characters all deserve one. With that said, this look set in 1928 and the way “others” are treated is interesting but does lack a little “something.” (Which is partially why I was wanting these characters to have a happy ending.) The afterwards was also interesting, putting things into context. While for at least 12-13 […]

Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is Sarah Andersen at their best! This time instead of following Sarah, we follow the Cryptid creatures and their everyday troubles, laughs, and ghostly loves in Cryptid Club. We follow the trials and tribulation of Nessie, Mothman, Slenderman, Sam the Big Foot and friends who are waiting to give you a laugh or ten.   You might need to know a few of the cryptids involved or some jokes will fall flat (Slenderman is great with children) and what a Siren is (and why […]

Wild: Or So I Was Born To Be by Cristian Castelo

July 26, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Scandal Level 3 (the scandalous behavior) This first volume of “the Wild” series, is set in the late 1970s and is a coming of age on the roller derby track. Do not worry about winning, just try to stay alive, as you hallucinate, dreams and the rival teams after you. The ketchup, mustard and hamburger colors show in minimalist format, the gruesome ugliness of it all (and the spaghetti eating contest wall of shame). Cristian Castelo has a warp self of self. They made […]

My Ten Painted Nails: Bilingual Inuktitut and English Edition by Jennifer Jaypoody

July 26, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr14bingo Recommend Level 3      I am going to recommend this book to everyone I know even though My Ten Painted Nails: Bilingual Inuktitut and English Edition has only one flaw. I was unsure how to pronounce the Inuktitut words. Now, I could assume that since the text say in English, “this is pink” or “this is one,” I could assume which words were which, but still unsure how to pronounce it. Plus, I know some languages do not read in the same order […]
